Structures clinical experience to provide opportunity for integration and refinement of the knowledge and skills necessary for entry level employment.
Prerequisite(s): PTA 205 , PTA 205L , PTA 209 , PTA 209L , PTA 210 , PTA 210LW , PTA 213 , PTA 213L , PTA 214W , PTA 218 , PTA 222 , each with a "C" (2.0) minimum grade. Corequisite(s): PTA 216W , PTA 221 and PTA 225 Lecture Hours: 0 Lab Hours: 480 Meets MTA Requirement: None Pass/NoCredit: No
Outcomes and Objectives
- Comply with departmental policies and procedures at the assigned clinical site.
- Read the clinical site policy and procedure manual.
- Ask questions about any part of the manual that the student does not understand.
- Employ good time management skills.
- Discuss the influence of policies and procedures on the workings of the department.
- Complete billing and statistical records accurately.
- Review CSIF for the applicable clinical site.
- Perform assessment procedures within the scope of practice of a PTA.
- Select appropriate assessment tools based on patient status.
- Demonstrate proper use and/or placement of equipment.
- Modify approach based on patient response.
- Demonstrate proper sequence of procedure steps.
- Correlate objective data to functional levels.
- Relate the assessment procedure selected to the patient's condition.
- Recognize when the patient has reached optimum benefit from physical therapy treatment.
- Perform treatment on patients using modalities and techniques practiced in the PTA curriculum prior to the clinical affiliation.
- Review a medical chart and identify significant information necessary to treat the patient.
- Demonstrate an awareness of indications and contraindications to treatment procedure.
- Prepare treatment area for application of treatment techniques.
- Prepare patient for application of treatment techniques using correct positioning.
- Demonstrate proper placement and/or use of equipment.
- Use logical sequence of treatment steps.
- Respond to changes in patient status.
- Handle patients with care.
- Utilize good body mechanics during treatment procedures.
- Seek appropriate input from CI.
- Terminate treatment sessions appropriately.
- Discuss the rationale behind the chosen treatment.
- Select appropriate modifications to treatment based on patient response.
- Apply multiple treatments in a reasoned sequence when appropriate.
- Provide follow-up instructions and information at the end of the treatment session.
- Communicate effectively with the supervising Physical Therapist or Physical Therapist Assistant.
- Discuss evaluations performed by the Physical Therapist.
- Pronounce and use medical terms correctly.
- Organize thoughts logically.
- Show evidence of personal thought and ability to see multiple perspectives when questioned.
- Ask questions about appropriate behaviors.
- Recognize effects of non-verbal signals.
- Demonstrate good listening skills.
- Complete documentation as required regarding patient status, progress, or treatment using correct format with legible writing and appropriate terminology.
- Volunteer reaction to situations.

- Question the patient about comfort level before, during, and after treatment session.
