PTA 213L - Orthotics and Prosthetics Lab

Prepares student to utilize orthotics and prosthetics, as well as to instruct patients to use this equipment. Prepares the student to perform physical therapy intervention as part of a physical therapist's plan of care, under the direction and supervision of the physical therapist.

Outcomes and Objectives
  1. Demonstrate pre-operative foot care.
    1. Educate patients in the prevention and management of an ulcerated foot.
    2. Provide treatment and exercises to increase circulation and decrease swelling of an ulcerated foot.
  2. Perform a progressive amputee treatment protocol.
    1. Perform effective residual limb wrapping and educate patient/caregiver to do so.
    2. Perform a progressive amputee exercise regimen to obtain optimal return of function.
    3. Assess the residual limb prior to and after treatment, including volume, length, girth, shape, skin, and incision integrity, sensation, and knee stability.
    4. Educate the amputee in care of the residual limb, expectations during rehabilitation, and expectations for discharge.
    5. Instruct the patient in treatment techniques to help assist in volume control.
  3. Explain gait training with the prosthesis as well as the proper assistive device(s) necessary to assist the amputee in mobility and function.
    1. Instruct the patient in proper gait with the prothesis or orthoses.
    2. Recognize gait deviations and what changes to report to the supervising physical therapist.
    3. Educate the amputee in proper wheelchair seating and mobility.
    4. Instruct the patient/caregiver in the use of the proper assistive device.
  4. Explain amputee care verbally or in writing.
    1. Communicate with the patient, family, and/or caregiver verbally and in writing regarding his/her condition and treatment using proper terminology applicable and understandable to all participants.
  5. Discuss resources available to amputee patients for rehabilitation.
    1. Assemble 10 community resources the patient may call on for assistance to maintain independence at home.
    2. Describe the purpose of an amputee clinic and list five interdisciplinary team members who may be present at an amputee clinic.
    3. Compare the advantages and disadvantages of attending an amputee clinic.
    4. Discuss the role of the PTA in working with patients that utilize prosthetics and/or orthotics.
  6. Compare and contrast a variety of orthotic devices for use in pediatric and adult populations.
    1. Identify specific orthotics by name.
    2. Differentiate the use for specified orthotics.
    3. Donn and doff a variety of orthotics.
  7. ​Use appropriate action in emergency situations.
    1. Participate in mock emergency scenarios.
