PTA 125 - Applied Clinical Anatomy II

Provide muscular anatomy concepts necessary to implement procedures utilized in physical therapy practice. Provides the technical and data collection knowledge necessary to assist a physical therapist with manual muscle testing. Prepares the student to perform physical therapy intervention as part of a physical therapist's plan of care, under the direction and supervision of the physical therapist.

  1. Describe the basic functional characteristics of the human muscular system.
    1. Describe the significance of muscle fiber arrangement.
    2. Define length-tension relationship in muscle tissue.
    3. Explain active and passive insufficiency.
    4. Define types of muscle contraction.
    5. Identify the roles of muscles.
    6. Explain the relevance of a  muscle’s attachment and name.
  2. Describe the basic functional characteristics of the human nervous system.
    1. Identify the major myotomes of the human body.
    2. Identify the major dermatomes of the human body.
    3. Compare spinal versus peripheral nerves.
    4. Outline the main pathway from the brain to a peripheral muscle and back.
  3. Discuss the concept of strength testing in physical therapy.
    1. Describe the purpose of Manual Muscle Testing.
    2. Explain the grading scales for MMT including:
      1. Numerical
      2. Descriptive
    3. Identify the primary muscle(s) involved in each joint motion that is being muscle tested.
    4. Discuss other methods used for testing strength.
  4. Describe the neuromusculoskeletal characteristics of the human upper extremity.
    1. Name the  origin/insertion/action/innervation of relevant upper extremity muscles.
    2. Identify the muscles of the rotator cuff and describe the relationship of the muscles with each other.
    3. Discriminate which upper extremity muscles are prime movers in common functional activities.
    4. Describe the difference between the extrinsic and intrinsic muscles of the hand.
  5. Describe the neuromusculoskeletal characteristics of the human lower extremity.
    1. Name the  origin/insertion/action/innervation of relevant lower extremity muscles.
    2. Discuss how the muscles of the hip have a direct relationship to the pelvis and pelvic dysfunction.
    3. Discriminate which lower extremity muscles are prime movers in common functional activities.
  6. Describe the neuromusculoskeletal characteristics of the human neck and trunk.
    1. Name the  origin/insertion/action/innervation of relevant trunk and neck muscles.
    2. Discuss how the muscles of the trunk have a direct relationship to the spine and spinal dysfunction.
    3. Discriminate which trunk muscles are prime movers in common functional activities.
  7. Describe the neuromuscular characteristics of the face and temporomandibular joint
    1. Name the  origin/insertion/action of relevant facial and TMJ muscles
  8. Discuss potential relevant legal or ethical issues as well as responses to the issues.
    1. Describe an appropriate response to each legal/ethical clinical issue discussed in class.
