PTA 214W - Clinical Education IICredits: 3 Structures clinical experience to provide the opportunity to observe and assist physical therapy procedures. Prepares the student to perform physical therapy intervention as part of a physical therapist's plan of care, under the direction and supervision of the physical therapist.
Prerequisite(s): PTA 102 , PTA 105 , PTA 105LW , PTA 120 , PTA 120L , PTA 123W , PTA 123LW , PTA 124 , PTA 125 , PTA 125LW , each with a “C” (2.0) minimum grade. Corequisite(s): PTA 205 , PTA 205L , PTA 209 , PTA 209L , PTA 210 , PTA 210LW , PTA 213 , PTA 213L , PTA 218 , PTA 222 Lecture Hours: 0 Lab Hours: 160 Meets MTA Requirement: None Pass/NoCredit: No
Outcomes and Objectives
- Demonstrate understanding of the clinical facility and departmental policies and procedures.
- Read policy and procedure manual.
- Ask questions about any part of manual that he/she does not understand.
- Follow the policies and procedures as outlined in the manual.
- Employ good time management skills.
- Review CCIF for his/her clinical site.
- Perform assessment procedures within the scope of work of a PTA.
- Select appropriate assessment tools based on the patient’s status.
- Demonstrate proper use and/or placement of equipment.
- Demonstrate proper sequence of procedure steps.
- Modify approach based on patient’s response.
- Perform treatment and techniques on patients practiced in the PTA curriculum prior to the clinical affiliation.
- Read the medical chart and find significant information necessary to treat the patient.
- Demonstrate an awareness of indications and contraindications to treatment procedures.
- Prepare treatment area for application of treatment techniques.
- Prepare patient for application of treatment techniques using correct positioning.
- Demonstrate proper placement and/or use of equipment.
- Use logical sequence of treatment steps.
- Respond to changes in patient’s status.
- Handle patient with care.
- Utilize good body mechanics during treatment procedures.
- Seek appropriate input from CI.
- Terminate treatment session appropriately.
- Demonstrate communiation skills with the supervising Physical Therapist or Physical Therapist Assistant.
- Discuss evaluations performed by the Physical Therapist.
- Pronounce and use medical terms correctly.
- Organize thoughts logically.
- Show evidence of personal thought and ability to see multiple perspectives when questioned.
- Asks questions about appropriate behaviors.
- Recognize effects of non-verbal signals.
- Demonstrate good listening skills.
- Complete documentation as required regarding the patient’s status, progress, or treatment using correct format with legible writing and appropriate terminology.
- Volunteer reaction to situations.
- Demonstrate communication skills with patient, family, physicians and other support staff.
- Question the patient about comfort level before, during, and after treatment session.
- Introduce self.
- Explain treatment to patient in layperson terms.
- Ask questions of patient, family or other health care personnel when appropriate.
- Maintain appropriate leadership in patient/family interactions.
- Respond sensitively and courteously during interactions.
- Demonstrate good listening skills.
- Adapt tone modulation, level and word usage to situation.
- Demonstrate interpersonal skills as an interdisciplinary health care team member.

- Identify major strengths and weaknesses.

- Complete CI evaluation form.
- Complete clinical center evaluation form.
- Review his/her evaluation with the CI.
- Discuss potential legal and ethical issues.
- Describe an appropriate response to each ethical/legal clinical issue discussed in class.
