PTA 125LW - Applied Clinical Anatomy II Lab

Credits: 1
Provides the technical and data collection skills necessary to assist a physical therapist with goniometry and muscle testing. Prepares the student to perform physical therapy intervention as part of a physical therapist's plan of care, under the direction and supervision of the physical therapist.

Outcomes and Objectives
  1. Perform a neurological assessment and record patient status.
    1. Utilize equilibrium and non-equilibrium coordination tests to assist in determining patient progress and appropriate progression of activities.
    2. Perform a basic assessment of mental status including memory, cognition, and ability to follow commands and report changes to supervising physical therapist.
    3. Perform spinal nerve dematomal sensation testing for light touch, hot/cold, and sharp/dull to determine progress or changes in patient status.
    4. Perform spinal nerve myotome testing to determine progress or changes in patient status.
    5. Perform a basic cranial nerve screen and report changes/results to supervising physical therapist.
    6. Perform deep tendon reflex testing and document results using correct grades.
  2. Perform muscle length assessment and recognize muscle length imbalances and the role imbalances can play in muscle function.
    1. Utilize the following tests to perform muscle length assessment: Thomas Test, Ober and Modified Ober, and Straight Leg Raise.
    2. Assess the following muscle lengths at the shoulder: pectoralis major and pectoralis minor.
    3. Describe and perform interventions to improve muscle length imbalances at the hip and shoulder.
  3. Discuss potential legal and ethical issues pertaining to course content and appropriate response to each.
    1. Describe an appropriate response to each legal/ethical clinical issue discussed in class.
  4. Perform manual muscle testing for major joints of the body.
    1. Correct patient position.
    2. Correct stabilization by PTA.
    3. Correct resistance by PTA.
  5. Document results of manual muscle testing.
    1. Utilize correct MMT grades.
    2. Identify numbers in correspondence to letters.
