PTA 209L - Fundamentals of Pediatric Rehabilitation Lab

Credits: 0.5
Prepares students to perform pediatric rehabilitation techniques for orthopedic and neurological disorders. Improves independence and function of the child by assessing equipment needs, utilizing adaptive devices, specific positioning techniques, and utilizing treatment techniques to enhance motor functions. Prepares the student to perform physical therapy intervention as part of a physical therapist's plan of care, under the direction and supervision of the physical therapist.

Prerequisite(s): PTA 102 , PTA 105 , PTA 105LW  , PTA 120 , PTA 120L , PTA 123W , PTA 123LW , PTA 124 , PTA 125 , PTA 125LW  each with a “C” (2.0) minimum grade.
Corequisite(s): PTA 205 , PTA 205L , PTA 209 , PTA 210 , PTA 210LW , PTA 213 , PTA 213L , PTA 214W , PTA 218 , PTA 222 .

Outcomes and Objectives
  1. Recognize abnormal motor development through developmental and reflexive assessment.
    1. Identify reflexes that have not been integrated and the importance of utilization of reflex activity in patient treatment and function.
    2. Assess for problems of abnormal motor behavior utilizing developmental assessments and screens.
  2. Perform various treatment activities utilized with children with neurological and orthopedic disorders in accordance with the plan of care developed by the supervising physical therapist.
    1. Demonstrate the use of the developmental sequence in treatment activities to enhance motor function.
    2. Perform treatment activities for children with the following disorders: high risk neonatal, spina bifida, cerebral palsy, juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, Down’s Syndrome, cystic fibrosis, various orthopedic disorders, muscular dystrophy, developmental delay, and other diagnoses seen within the school system.
    3. Demonstrate introductory handling skills to foster normal motor control in children with neurological disorders.
    4. Discuss the role of sensory integration therapy in enhancing motor and cognitive function in children with neurological dysfunction.
  3. Discuss potential legal and ethical issues pertaining to course content.
    1. Describe an appropriate response to each legal/ethical clinical issue discussed in class.
