PTA 213L - Orthotics and Prosthetics LabCredits: 0.5 Prepares student to utilize orthotics and prosthetics, as well as to instruct patients to use this equipment. Prepares the student to perform physical therapy intervention as part of a physical therapist's plan of care, under the direction and supervision of the physical therapist.

Outcomes and Objectives
- Demonstrate pre-operative foot care.
- Educate patients in the prevention and management of an ulcerated foot.
- Provide treatment and exercises to increase circulation and decrease swelling of an ulcerated foot.
- Discuss and acquire information to create a treatment program and then assess progress after each treatment.
- Discuss all information relevant for the physical therapy evaluation of the amputee patient.
- Assess patient’s abilities in all levels of mobility and function.
- Assess residual limb prior to and after treatment, including volume, length, girth, shape, skin and incision integrity and condition, sensation, and knee stability.
- Assess unaffected extremities.
- Perform a progressive amputee treatment protocol and explain the protocol to relevant parties.
- Perform effective stump wrapping and educate patient/caregiver to do so.
- Perform a progressive amputee exercise regime to obtain optimal return of function.
- Educate the amputee in care of the residula limb, expectations during rehabilitation and discharge.
- Instruct the patient in treatment techniques to help assist in volume control.
- Explain gait training with the prosthesis as well as the proper assistive devices necessary to assist amputee in mobility and function.
- Instruct the patient in proper gait with the prothesis or orthoses.
- Recognize gait deviations and report changes to the supervising physical therapist.
- Educate the amputee in proper wheelchair seating and mobility.
- Instruct the patient/caregiver in the use of the proper assistive device.
- Discuss verbally or in writing regarding the amputee patient.
- Communicate with the patient, family, and caregive verbally and in writing regarding his/her condition and treatment using proper terminology applicable and understandable to all participants.
- Communicate with all members of the interdisciplinary team involved in the care of the amputee patient verbally and in writing using proper terminology applicable and understandable to all participants.
- Discuss potential legal and ethical issues pertaining to course content.
- Describe an appropriate response to each legal/ethical clinical issue discussed in class.
