PTA 213L - Orthotics and Prosthetics Lab

Credits: 0.5
Prepares student to utilize orthotics and prosthetics, as well as to instruct patients to use this equipment. Prepares the student to perform physical therapy intervention as part of a physical therapist's plan of care, under the direction and supervision of the physical therapist.

Prerequisite(s): PTA 102 , PTA 105 , PTA 105LW , PTA 120 , PTA 120L PTA 123W , PTA 123LW , PTA 124 , PTA 125 , PTA 125LW , each with a “C” (2.0) minimum grade

Outcomes and Objectives
  1. Demonstrate pre-operative foot care.
    1. Educate patients in the prevention and management of an ulcerated foot.
    2. Provide treatment and exercises to increase circulation and decrease swelling of an ulcerated foot.
  2. Discuss and acquire information to create a treatment program and then assess progress after each treatment.
    1. Discuss all information relevant for the physical therapy evaluation of the amputee patient.
    2. Assess patient’s abilities in all levels of mobility and function.
    3. Assess residual limb prior to and after treatment, including volume, length, girth, shape, skin and incision integrity and condition, sensation, and knee stability.
    4. Assess unaffected extremities.
  3. Perform a progressive amputee treatment protocol and explain the protocol to relevant parties.
    1. Perform effective stump wrapping and educate patient/caregiver to do so.
    2. Perform a progressive amputee exercise regime to obtain optimal return of function.
    3. Educate the amputee in care of the residula limb, expectations during rehabilitation and discharge.
    4. Instruct the patient in treatment techniques to help assist in volume control.
  4. Explain gait training with the prosthesis as well as the proper assistive devices necessary to assist amputee in mobility and function.
    1. Instruct the patient in proper gait with the prothesis or orthoses.
    2. Recognize gait deviations and report changes to the supervising physical therapist.
    3. Educate the amputee in proper wheelchair seating and mobility.
    4. Instruct the patient/caregiver in the use of the proper assistive device.
  5. Discuss verbally or in writing regarding the amputee patient.
    1. Communicate with the patient, family, and caregive verbally and in writing regarding his/her condition and treatment using proper terminology applicable and understandable to all participants.
    2. Communicate with all members of the interdisciplinary team involved in the care of the amputee patient verbally and in writing using proper terminology applicable and understandable to all participants.
  6. Discuss potential legal and ethical issues pertaining to course content.
    1. Describe an appropriate response to each legal/ethical clinical issue discussed in class.
