DH 216W - Community Dentistry I

Provides theoretical base for assessing, designing, implementing, and evaluating dental health improvement programs. 

Prerequisite(s): DH 124B  DH 130  DH 131  DH 135  and LWA 206B  each with a "C" (2.0) minimum grade.

Outcomes and Objectives 1.     Have an understanding of similarity and differences from private practice and community health approaches to care of a population. A student will also have a basic understanding of the processes through which health policies are developed and regulated.

     A.          Define health, public health, dental public health and epidemiology.

     B.          Compare and contrast the roles and procedures of a private practitioner versus a public health practitioner.

     C.          Describe the history and organization of dental public health services.

     D.          Identify the issues of community oral health.

     E.          Review and define epidemic, endemic and pandemic.

2.    Have an understanding of basic concepts, including technical skills of assessing a community for development of dental public health
       programs.

     A.          Identify the items to be assessed for a complete community profile.

     B.          Define, differentiate and state indications for the different methods of assessment:

     C.          Analyze the data that may be gained.

     D.          Discuss the purposes of evaluating dental literature.

     E.          Define the role and responsibility of the critic.

     F.          Outline the criteria used to critically analyze professional literature.

     G.         Identify specific questions which should be asked by the critic when reading and evaluating professional literature.

     H.         Apply principles of research methods and scientific report writing to the evaluation of written communication.

     I.           Identify weaknesses in written professional communication which might lead the critical reader to question the validity or reliability of the
                  contents.

3.    Have an understanding of basic concepts, including technical skills involving planning of a variety dental public health programs. In
       addition the student 
will be exposed to the skills necessary to assume the leadership role in their community.

     A.          Compile data in the correct way for needs to be presented so that priorities may be seen.

     B.          Explain the criteria to construct solutions to the needs.

     C.          Discuss the reasons for more than one proposed solution.

     D.          Correctly write up a proposal for a health project.

4.    Have an understanding of basic concepts, including technical skills, involving implementation and operation of dental public health
       programs. In addition 
the student will be exposed to the skills necessary to assume the leadership role in their community. The student
       will understand basic technical skills in
areas of advocacy building.

     A.          Identify and explain solutions to problems that can occur during implementation of different projects.

     B.          Review and discuss educational strategies involved in implementation.

5.    Have an understanding of the imporatnce of evaluating dental literature. A student will also have the basic understanding of the criteria
       utilized for reviewing dental literature and the terminolgy utilized.

     A.          Discuss the purposes of evaluating dental literature

     B.          Compare and contrast the different research designs

     C.          Define the role and responsibility of the critic.

     D.          Outline the criteria used to critically analyze professional literature.

     E.          Identify specific questions which should be asked by the critic when reading and evaluating professional literature.

6.    Have an understanding of basic concepts of promoting health through preventive activities through dental public health programs.

     A.          Review procedures and list ways of preventing dental caries and periodontal disease.

     B.          Discuss methods of promoting these procedures in the community.

     C.          List the criteria for a public health measure.

     D.          Discuss established generalities of Oral Disease Epidemiology.

     E.          Respect the goals, values, beliefs and preferences of the the patient/client while promoting optimal oral and general health.

     F.          Identify individual and population risk factors and develop strategies that promote health- related quality of life, for example: fluoride, PFS,
                  nutrition, and smokeless tobacco.

     G.         Evaluate factors that can be used to promot patient/client adherence to disease prevention and/or health maintenance strategies.

     H.         Evaluate and utilize methods to ensure the health and safety of the patient/client and the dental hygienist in the delivery of dental hygiene.

7.    Have an understanding of basic concepts involving barriers to care within the dental community and general community in order to be
       effective in 
assessing, planning, implementation, operation, and evaluation of dental public health programs.

     A.          Discuss the barriers of care, including the following:

                  1.    Financial

                  2.    Ethnic and racial

                  3.    Geographic

                  4.    Aged and handicapped

                  5.    Psychological

     B.          Explain ways to reduce or totally eliminate the above barriers.

     C.         Compare need and demand terms.

8.    Have an understanding of basic concepts involving person power within the dental community and general community in order to be
       effective in 
assessing, planning, implementation, operation, and evaluation of dental public health programs.

     A.          Explain if there is a person-power problem and, if so, why.

     B.          Suggest alternative systems that will provide a more efficient delivery of care.

     C.          Discuss how expanded function affects this issue.

 9.    Understand basic technical skills in quality assurance, and risk management.

     A.          Explain what is meant by quality assurance.

     B.          Discuss what has already been designed and their mechanisms to assure quality by the following agencies:

     C.          Explain when the mechanisms for assuring quality are utilized

     C.          Facilitate client access to oral health services by influencing individuals and/or organizations for the provision of oral health care.

     D.          Evaluate the outcomes of community-based programs and plan for future activities.
