DMS 106W - Ultrasound Scanning

Provides hands on experience in sonographic imaging. Teaches basic operations of the ultrasound machine along with transducer orientation. Includes an overview of abdominal and pelvis imaging, scan plane recognition, and basic imaging concepts.

Prerequisite(s): DMS 100, DMS 105W, DMS 107, DMS 107L, DMS 108W each with a minimum grade of “B” (3.0)
Corequisite(s): DMS 101W, DMS 103, DMS 104, and LW 206A

Outcomes and Objectives

Demonstrate knowledge of abdominal/pelvic anatomy location and sonographic appearance.
1. Identify abdominal and pelvis anatomy while scanning the abdomen/pelvis.
2. Demonstrate the ability to recognize scan planes for abdomen/pelvis anatomy
Demonstrate appropriate image optimization techniques.
1. Demonstrate proper optimization for organ and structure penetration
2. Demonstrate the ability to zoom or magnify an image
3. Demonstrate the ability to adjust the focal zone to the area of interest
4. Demonstrate the ability to obtain correct brightness and contrast for abdomen/pelvic images
5. Demonstrate appropriate transducer selection for the organ scanned
Demonstrate proficiency in obtaining basic abdominal images for interpretation.
1. Obtain satisfactory images for interpretation for the following anatomy:
  1. Gallbladder
  2. Liver
  3. Pancreas
  4. Kidneys
  5. Spleen
  6. Uterus
  7. Ovaries
  8. Pelvis cavity
