Associate in Arts - History Transfer Pathway

This degree program is designed to allow you to complete required general education courses and introductory history courses for your intended program of study at a college or university. This transfer program is intended for students seeking to complete a bachelor's degree or higher in history. Students are encouraged to consult with a Student Success Advisor about proper course selections based on transfer destination and career goals.

Program Requirements Meeting the Michigan Transfer Agreement
Students wishing to fulfill the Michigan Transfer Agreement (MTA) must successfully complete at least 30 credits from the MTA Approved List with a minimum of a “C” (2.0) in each course. Students are encouraged to consult with a Student Success Advisor about proper course selections based on transfer destination and career goals. Humanities
Humanities courses must be from two different subjects. Note: A foreign language is recommended. Social Sciences
Social Science courses must be from two different subjects. HIS 237W (recommended) and POL 105HW /POL 105W will satisfy both the Foundational Civics and Civic Engagement graduation requirements. Natural Science
Natural Science courses must be from two different subjects. Note: BIO 230HW /BIO 230W is recommended as a non-lab course. Additional Degree Requirements
Civic Engagement
- Any Civic Engagement option from approved list below
Approved options are: HIS 237W (recommended), or POL 105HW /POL 105W . OR A Civic Engagement project (1 credit) - A faculty member (History faculty member recommended) must supervise this project, either as a project tied to a course, or as individualized instruction. HIS 237W (recommended) and POL 105HW /POL 105W will satisfy both the Foundational Civics and Civic Engagement graduation requirements. Lifelong Wellness
- Complete a minimum of 2 credits in any set of Lifelong Wellness course options from the Lifelong Wellness page
Major Courses
- A minimum of four history classes (at least one American and one non-American) is required as part of the general electives needed for an Associate in Arts degree. Choose from the following:
American (generally U.S.-focused) Courses: - HIS 215W — Recent African-American History: Since 1865
- HIS 217W — Hispanics in the U.S.
- HIS 221W — Early American History
- HIS 222W — Recent American History
- HIS 225W — History of Women and Gender in the United States
- HIS 237W — History of Michigan/With Project
Non-American Courses: - HIS 111W — A Survey of Early Western Civilization
- HIS 112W — A Survey of Later Western Civilization
- HIS 240W — Renaissances and Reformations in Early Modern Europe
- HIS 242W — Medieval History: c. 500-1500 CE
Students are encouraged to consult with a Student Success Advisor about proper course selections based on transfer destination and career goals. Additional Electives
- Electives to meet the overall 62 credits required for an Associate in Arts Degree
Elective courses may be taken from History or other disciplines. At least one additional History course is recommended in addition to the four required. - Students with special considerations for exercise should reach out to the course instructor, program coordinator, and/or Office of Disability Resources for exercise accommodations when appropriate. The Lifelong Wellness Activity (LWA) 1 credit class can be waived with a full season of intercollegiate athletics validated by the Athletic Director.
