Studies Professional, ethical and legal issues related to clinical practice. Prepares students for participation in full time clinical rotations.

Outcomes and Objectives 1. Prepare for full-time clinical rotations.

A. Become familiar with practice sites available for Clinical Education II and III
B. Participate in the placement process for Clinical Education II and III
C. Participate in training sessions required for use of the Clinical Performance Instrument
D. Create individualized goals for Clinical Education II
E. Complete clinical site prerequisites assigned by clinical site
F. Discuss initiative, communication and problem solving in the clinical rotation
G. Become familiar with all aspects of the assigned clinical site for Clinical Education II
H. Discuss student expectations for Clinical Educaion II

2. Discuss the APTA (American Physical Therapy Association).

A. Discuss the roles of th4e APTA, its history and purpose in health care today.
B. Discuss the APTA standards of ethical conduct of the physical therapist assistant.
C. Discuss the APTA guide for conduct of the affiliate member.
D. Discuss the APTA guide for professional conduct.
E. Discuss the APTA code of ethics for the physical therapy profession.
F. Discuss the APTA governing rules.

3. Demonstrate understanding of role of physical therapy management within health care organizations.

A. Discuss fiscal management of PT.
B. Discuss planning and decision making in PT management.
C. Discuss PT systems in various settings including schools, community hospitals, mulit hospital corporations, outpatient settings, etc.
D. Discuss the importance of marketing PT.
E. Understand and deminstrate quality and productivity in PT.
F. Discuss laws and regulations governing PT practice in Michigan and nationally.
G. Discuess ethical aspects of PT management as it relates to moral dilemmas, principles and debates, rights and obligations of employees, patients, and health care organizations.

4. Demonstrates understanding of patient/practitioner interaction.

A. Define, compare and contrast values, needs, morals.
B. Develop ethical consciousness and moral decision making skills.
C. Discuss cultural and peraonl biases of patients and clinicians and how they impact treatment.

A. Describe appropriate legal/ethical responses to each issue discussed in class.
