PTA 225 - Topics in Manual Therapy

The study of common manual therapy techniques used in Physical Therapy to treat soft tissue and joint structures for the purpose of modulating pain, increasing range of motion, inducing relaxation, improving soft tissue extensibility and/or stability, facilitating movement and improving function.

Prerequisite(s): PTA 205 , PTA 205L , PTA 209 , PTA 209L , PTA 210 , PTA 210LW , PTA 213 , PTA 213L , PTA 214W , PTA 218  , PTA 222 , each with a “C” (2.0) minimum grade
Corequisite(s): PTA 216W , PTA 221  and PTA 224W

    1. Explain the theory behind the use of Kinesiotaping
    2. Discuss common orthopedic conditions for which taping would be beneficial
    3. Demonstrate common taping techniques for orthopedic conditions
    4. Describe the effect of kinesiotaping.
  2. Discuss common manual therapy approaches to treatment.
    1. Describe the theory and purpose of the following
      1. Myofascial Release
      2. Muscle Energy Techniques (MET)
      3. Strain/Counter-Strain
      4. Feldenkrais
      5. Dry Needling
  3. Compare and contrast Non-Thrust oscillations with Non-thrust sustained joint play mobilization techniques
    1. Discuss the difference between oscillation techniques and sustained joint play techniques
    2. Discuss appropriate utilization of oscillation and sustained joint play techniques
    3. Describe dosage and rate of oscillation and sustained joint play Non-Thrust mobilization techniques.
    4. Identifyabsolute and relative contraindications to Non-Thrust joint mobilization techniques
    5. Administer Non-Thrust peripheral joint mobilization techniques utilizing oscillations
    6. Administer Non-Thrust peripheral joint mobilization techniques utilizing sustained joint play techniques
