Utilizes the Delta College simulation lab to provide a realistic environment in order to practice communicating effectively, maintaining professionalism and situational awareness during stressful or uncomfortable exams

Prerequisite(s): DMS 101W , DMS 103 , DMS 104 , and DMS 106W  each with a minimum grade of “B” (3.0) and LW 206A  with a minimum grade of “C” (2.0)
Corequisite(s): DMS 111 , DMS 114 , DMS 115 , and DMS 117W

Outcomes and Objectives  

  1. Demonstrate, through simulation exercises, knowledge of the role of the sonographer in patient management.
  1. Demonstrate the ability to take a complete patient history according to the exam ordered
  2. Demonstrate the ability to correlate patient history with related imaging, other testing and lab procedures and outcomes.
  3. Demonstrate the ability to read and understand a requisition order
  4. Demonstrate positive patient interaction in the process of getting the patient ready for the exam, performing the exam, and dismissing the patient
  5. Demonstrate the ability to develop communication strategies to deal with inappropriate patient behavior
  6. Demonstrate the ability to show concern and empathy for the patient who is in distress and choose appropriate actions according to the particular situation
  7. Demonstrate the ability to educate the patient regarding the ultrasound exam to be completed and their experience in the ultrasound department
  8. Demonstrate the ability to handle inappropriate patient behavior towards the sonographer and seek help if needed
  9. Demonstrate proper application of institution policies as they relate to sonographer/patient interaction
