Criminal Justice - AAA

Return to {$returnto_text} Return to: Programs by Division

Program Code: AAA.25727

The Delta College Criminal Justice program is designed to give you specialized knowledge of the criminal justice field combined with a broad general educational background. The program offers theoretical, practical, and technical instruction designed to meet an ever-increasing demand and continuous upgrading of personnel by criminal justice agencies. As a graduate of this program, depending on the option chosen, you would be prepared to seek employment as a police officer, corrections officer, conservation officer, public safety dispatcher, juvenile officer, private security manager, or prepare for careers in probation/parole/courts, federal government, Crime Scene Investigation, detective, pre-law and many other related careers.

Students can choose from five focus areas, each requiring a set of core criminal justice courses while offering opportunities for specialization in areas of interest. Importantly, all tracks, except the Law Enforcement with Police Academy track, include sufficient open elective credits that can be used to meet general education requirements for transfer to a four-year institution. The Police Academy track uses these electives for academy-specific coursework, limiting its transferability.

The focus areas include:

  • Corrections: Prepares students for careers as corrections officers in prisons or jails or as juvenile care workers.
  • Security Management: Focuses on skills for careers in private security and security management.
  • Law Enforcement: Prepares students to attend a regional or state police academy.
  • Law Enforcement with Police Academy: Allows students to complete their degree and the Delta Police Academy simultaneously. This track includes 12 credits directly tied to academy coursework, which are not open electives and cannot be applied to general education requirements for transfer. (See Note below for additional details.)
  • Generalist: Offers flexibility for students with diverse interests across the criminal justice field, combining core courses with elective specializations tailored to individual goals

Students are encouraged to consult with a Student Success Advisor to select the focus area that best aligns with their career and transfer goals.

Notations

  1. A grade of “C” (2.0) or higher is required in all Criminal Justice (CJ) and cybersecurity investigations courses (CSI).
  2. Employment within the Criminal Justice field may be delayed or denied depending on a history of convictions involving felonies, misdemeanors, and/or involving controlled substances.
  3. Students planning to transfer should work with their Delta Student Success Advisor to select courses most beneficial in transfer.
  4. Criminal Justice Academic Programs do not certify you for employment as a police officer without the Basic Police Training Program (B.P.T.). The B.P.T. is a part of the “Law Enforcement with Police Academy” focus, however, it is the B.P.T. that provides your ability to certify as a law enforcement officer. Students who plan to take the Police Academy [Basic Police Training (B.P.T)] should see their Student Success Advisor or contact the Delta College Police Academy (N-102, Main campus; phone 989-686-9108)
  5. CJ 101 , LWA 280 , LWT 175 , and OAT 153  are taken concurrently and together make up the Basic Police Training (B.P.T) Academy (12 credits). For information about B.P.T. contact the Delta College Police Academy. LWA 280  fulfills the 2-credit LW requirement for the Associate Degree.
