Fire Science Technology - AAS

Each of the tracks in the Fire Science Technology Associate degree program is designed to provide vocational and technical skills which will provide the educational credentials for employment or promotional opportunities. 

Track 1: Fire Fighter Technician

As a student you will embrace a wide range of knowledge leading to the control or prevention of fire and the handling of hazardous materials. As a Fire Fighter, you will respond to emergency calls, control and extinguish fires, mitigate hazards, protect life and property, and maintain equipment. You will be responsible for proper use and maintenance of equipment, educating the public, responding to emergencies and developing pre-incident plans to protect the community against loss of life and property.

Track 2: Emergency Medical Services

This program track is designed for the entering college student, the professional fire fighter and persons employed in a broad range of occupations related to fire science and safety. As an Emergency Medical Technician, you will provide basic emergency prehospital care to patients involved in accidents, injuries, or sudden illness. Places of employment include fire and police departments, rescue operations, ambulance services, hospitals, and industrial sites.

Track 3: Leadership and Training

Technical competency prepares students for managerial and leadership positions in municipal, industrial or business entities. You will provide the command and educational functions for public or private entities. Responsibiliites include all major functions at emergency scenes, training of personnel, safety and overall management of resources.

Notations


  1. A “C” (2.0) minimum grade is required in all of the Fire Science Core courses (FST 101W FST 102W FST 103W FST 105W FST 107W FST 205W FST 219 , and FST 301 ) and Approved Electives for a degree.

  4. Approved electives can be any combination of courses in the other tracks in this degree and other FST certificate options and those listed as approved electives.

  6. 3 + 1 degree options are available. Contact you student success advisor for more information.
  7. General electives must be 100 level or above courses.
  8. Students pursuing Company Officer I & II (CO I & II) certification through the Michigan Fire Fighters Training Council must complete the following courses: FST 102W , FST 120W  , FST 211  , FST 280W  , FST 301  , FST 307  .  All FST courses required for CO I & II are registered with the MFFTC.
  9.  Students pursuing Fire Officer III certification through the Michigan Fire Fighters Training Council must complete FST 302 FST 303 , and FST 308  . All FST courses required for Fire Officer III are registered with the MFFTC.
