RAD 258W - Radiography Capstone Seminar

Provides strategies and opportunities to enhance the likelihood of success on the national ARRT registry examination. Employment search strategies are discussed and practiced including the writing of a professional cover letter and resume.

Prerequisite(s): RAD 160 RAD 165W , RAD 212  each with a "C" (2.0) minimum grade.

Outcomes and Objectives
  1. Develop test taking skills and strategies to be successful on the ARRT examination.
    1. Discuss and practice ways of reducing test anxiety.
    2. Develop a study plan.
    3. Practice reading and answering multiple choice test questions.
    4. Complete a mock ARRT examination.
  2. Identify the information necessary to maintain radiation safety during radiographic procedures.
    1. Understand the radiosensitivity of the human body to ionizing radiation.
    2. Demonstrate radiation protection practices that minimize patient dose.
    3. Discuss and identify the procedures and practices to minimize occupaional dose.
    4. Identify how radiation exposure is measured and monitored.
  3. Identify and discuss the components and operation of various radiology equipment and how it is maintained and monitored for quality.
    1. Describe the production and properties of x-rays.
    2. Discuss how the x-ray photons interact with matter and how this affects the radiographic image.
    3. identify the components of a basic radiographic unit and discuss the function of said unit.
    4. Discuss the Digital applications of image production including Image Display and Image Acquistion.
    5. Identify accessory equipment and discuss their use in a radiology department.
    6. Discuss the various quality control processes for radiographic equipment.
  4. Identify and discuss the manipulation of the radiographic image.
    1. Critique radiographic images for quality.
    2. Discuss how the various technical factors relate to radiographic quality.
    3. Discuss how pathologic conditions affect technical factor selection.
    4. Develop a technique chart.
    5. Explain how an automatic Exposure Control System works.
    6. Discuss the operation of the automatic processor.
    7. Discuss image manipulation using a computed radiography system.
    8. Explain what a PACS system is and how it works.
  5. Identify and discuss anatomy and positioning for all anatomical areas of the human body.
    1. Discuss the anatomy demonstrated and the routine and special projections for the following anatomical areas:
      1. Thorax
      2. Abdomen and GI
      3. Urological
      4. Spine and Pelvis
      5. Extremities
      6. Various special procedures as described in class
      7. Cranium
  6. Discuss how patient care practices affect the radiology department.
    1. Discuss legal and ethical patient care practices.
    2. Discuss the confidentiality when accessing patient records, diagnostic images, and reports.
    3. Demonstrate various forms of communication.
    4. Understand basic terminology and concepts of infection control.
    5. Demonstrate appropriate patient transfer and transport.
    6. Discuss the radiographer's role in basic medical emergencies.
  7. Complete a personal/professional portfolio organizing information from textbooks, PowerPoints, lectures, and class discussions as it relates to ARRT exam preparation and success in the field of radiography.
    1. Document areas of weakness in radiographic knowledge.
    2. Develop a study plan usable for the last five weeks of clinical.
    3. Construct a cover and letter resume.
