PTA 124 - Clinical Education I

1. Comply with departmental policies and procedures at the assigned clinical site.
   1. Read policy and procedure manual.
   2. Follow policies and procedures.
   3. Employ time management skills.
   4. Ask questions about any part of the manual that is not understood.
2. Communicate effectively with the supervising Physical Therapist or Physical Therapist Assistant.
   1. Discuss physical therapist initial evaluations.
   2. Complete documentation as required regarding the patient’s status, progress, or treatment with supervision.
   3. Pronounce and use medical terms correctly.
   4. Demonstrate good listening skills.
   5. Write legibly or type with correct spelling and terminology.
   6. Recognize situations that require further clarification, supervision, or action by the supervising physical therapist. 
3. Perform interventions and data collection on patients that were practiced in the PTA curriculum prior to this clinical affiliation.
   1. Prepare treatment area for application of treatment techniques.
   2. Demonstrate proper placement and/or use of equipment.
   3. Position patient appropriately for specific treatment.
   4. Handle patient with care.
   5. Utilize good body mechanics.
   6. Seek appropriate input from CI.
   7. Clean treatment area after treatment is provided.
   8. Review a medical chart and identify significant information necessary to treat the patient.
   9. Demonstrate an awareness of indications and contraindications to treatment procedures.
4. Demonstrate effective communication skills with all relevant parties.
   1. Question the patient about comfort level before, during, and after treatment.
   2. Introduce self.
   3. Ask questions of patient, family, or other health care professionals when appropriate.
   4. Adapt tone modulation, level, and word usage to situation.
   5. Respond sensitively and courteously during interactions.
5. Evaluate the clinical experience.
   1. Discuss performance accurately and openly with CI.
   2. Respond to clinical instructor feedback with constructive comments and suggestions.
   3. Acknowledge feedback received.
   4. Complete required evaluation forms.
6. Employ continuity in patient care
   1. Provide treatment to the same patient at least twice during their episode of care.
   2. Recognize the need to progress therapeutic interventions.
   3. Develop rapport with patients.
   4. Assess improvements or regression in patient’s status.
   5. Develop patient treatment progression skill.
7. Discuss relevant legal or ethical issues as well as responses to the issues.
   1. Describe an appropriate response to each legal/ethical issue encountered in the clinic.
