PTA 120L - Orthopedic Rehabilitation Lab

Provides entry-level technical skills needed to administer rehabilitation exercise programs for orthopedic conditions. Prepares the student to perform physical therapy intervention as part of a physical therapist's plan of care, under the direction and supervision of the physical therapist.

Prerequisite(s): PTA 102 PTA 123W PTA 123LW PTA 125 PTA 125LW LWT 214  each with a minimum grade of “C” (2.0).

Outcomes and Objectives  

  1. Demonstrate peripheral joint mobilizations for the shoulder, wrist, hip, and ankle.
    1. Identify and describe joint end feel.
    2. Assess gliding motions of the shoulder, wrist, hip, and ankle joints.
    3. Practice Grades I & II peripheral joint mobs.
  2. Implement appropriate methods of management and rehabilitation for select orthopedic diagnoses of the shoulder in accordance with the plan of care established by the physical therapist.
    1. Practice potential treatment methods for the identified injuries of the shoulder.
    2. Determine the need for progression in an exercise program designed for the shoulder.
    3. Demonstrate various special tests as they relate to common orthopedic problems of the shoulder.
    4. Indicate various contraindications for exercise as they relate to common orthopedic problems of the shoulder.
    5. Compare and contrast various exercise protocols for different orthopedic problems of the shoulder.
    6. Demonstrate common mobilization techniques for the shoulder.
    7. Execute designed exercise protocols on simulated patients.
  3. Implement appropriate methods of management and rehabilitation for select orthopedic diagnoses of the elbow in accordance with the plan of care established by the physical therapist.

    1. Practice potential treatment methods for relevant conditions of the neck, back, and pelvic floor.
    2. Determine the need for progression in an exercise program designed for the neck, back, and pelvic floor.
    3. Demonstrate various special tests as they relate to common orthopedic problems of the neck and back.
    4. Indicate various contraindications for exercise as they relate to common orthopedic problems of the neck and back.
    5. Compare and contrast various exercise protocols for different orthopedic problems of the neck and back.
    6. Develop neck, back, and deep core stabilization exercises and utilize them correctly.
    7. Execute designed exercise protocols on simulated patients.
  9. Utilize relaxation techniques.
    1. Demonstrate various relaxation techniques.
  10. Differentiate when an exercise program should not be performed due to change in a patient’s status.
    1. Ask appropriate assessment questions prior to implementing an exercise program.
    2. Review notes from previous treatments.
    3. Observe a patient’s nonverbal body language for signs of distress or pain.
    4. Recognize situations that require further clarification, supervision, or action by the supervising physical therapist.
  11. Discuss potential legal or ethical issues pertaining to orthopedic rehabilitation.
    1. Describe an appropriate response to each legal/ethical clinical issue discussed in class.
