PTA 124 - Clinical Education ICredits: 2 Instructional Contact Hours: 2
Structured clinical experience to provide the opportunity to observe and assist with physical therapy procedures. Prepares the student to perform physical therapy intervention as part of a physical therapist's plan of care, under the direction and supervision of the physical therapist.
Prerequisite(s): PTA 102 , PTA 123W , PTA 123LW , PTA 125 , PTA 125LW , LWT 214 each with a “C” (2.0) minimum grade Corequisite(s): PTA 105 , PTA 105LW , PTA 120 , PTA 120L , PTA 121 Lecture Hours: 0 Lab Hours: 64 Meets MTA Requirement: None Pass/NoCredit: Yes

- Comply with departmental policies and procedures at the assigned clinical site.
- Read policy and procedure manual.
- Follow policies and procedures.
- Employ time management skills.
- Ask questions about any part of the manual that is not understood.
- Communicate effectively with the supervising Physical Therapist or Physical Therapist Assistant.
- Discuss observations of evaluations by physical therapist.
- Complete documentation as required regarding the patient’s status, progress, or treatment with supervision.
- Pronounce and use medical terms correctly.
- Demonstrate good listening skills.
- Write legibly or type with correct spelling and terminology.
- Perform treatments on patients using modalities or techniques practiced in PTA curriculum prior to this clinical affiliation.
- Prepare treatment area for application of treatment techniques.
- Demonstrate proper placement and/or use of equipment.
- Position patient appropriately for specific treatment.
- Handle patient with care.
- Utilize good body mechanics.
- Seek appropriate input from CI.
- Clean treatment area after treatment is provided.
- Review a medical chart and identify significant information necessary to treat the patient.
- Demonstrate an awareness of indications and contraindications to treatment procedures.
- Demonstrate effective communication skills with all relevant parties.
- Question the patient about comfort level before, during, and after treatment.
- Introduce self.
- Ask questions of patient, family, or other health care professionals when appropriate.
- Adapt tone modulation, level, and word usage to situation.
- Respond sensitively and courteously during interactions.
- Evaluate the clinical experience.
- Discuss performance accurately and openly with CI.
- Respond to evaluation with constructive comments and suggestions.
- Acknowledge feedback received.
- Complete required evaluation forms.
- Employ continuity in patient care
- Provide treatment to the same patient twice in one week.
- Recognize the need to progress patient treatment.
- Develop rapport with patients.
- Assess improvements or regression in patient’s status.
- Develop patient treatment progression skill.
- Discuss relevant legal or ethical issues as well as responses to the issues.
- Describe an appropriate response to each legal/ethical issue encountered in the clinic.
