PTA 123LW - Pathophysiology II Lab

Exposes the student to health care practices performed in the acute care environment. Prepares the student to perform physical therapy intervention as part of a physical therapist's plan of care, under the direction of the physical therapist.

Prerequisite(s): PTA 101 PTA 101LW PTA 103 PTA 110 PTA 110L PTA 118 ; each with a minimum grade of “C” (2.0)

Outcomes and Objectives  

  1. Utilize appropriate treatment interventions with various wounds encountered in the physical therapy setting.
    1. Document findings and procedures accurately for treatment of a wound.
    2. Practice sterile debridement techniques using a mock wound.
    3. Demonstrate appropriate application and removal of dressings or agents based on a plan of care by the supervising therapist.
    4. Indicate precautions for dressing removal during mock wound treatment.
    5. Recognize changes within a wound that require evaluation by the physical therapist.
  2. Prepare a sterile field for wound care interventions.
    1. Identify appropriate materials used in a sterile field for wound care.
    2. Differentiate between medical and surgical asepsis.
    3. Demonstrate proper donning and doffing of personal protective equipment to reduce contamination of wound and environment.
    4. Effectively place wound treatment materials in a sterile field.
  3. Implement chest physical therapy techniques on a mock patient.
    1. Position patients appropriately for postural drainage of specific areas of the lungs.
    2. Demonstrate appropriate use of percussion to assist in secretion clearance in specific areas of the lungs.
    3. Demonstrate an appropriate deep cough technique to a patient with pulmonary issues given a case scenario.
    4. Demonstrate specific thoracic mobilization exercises to improve posture and thoracic mobility for more efficient breathing.
    5. Monitor vital signs during patient treatment including BP, HR, respiration rate, pulse oximetry, and SOB.
    6. Document a physical therapy treatment session using chest physical therapy and recognize what changes to report to the supervising PT.
    7. Describe the resting posture/position of a patient with a pulmonary diagnosis, including breathing pattern, body position, chest configuration, and use of accessory muscles.
  4. Practice cardiac monitoring/assessment on a mock patient.
    1. Palpate the following pulse points: carotid, brachial, radial, ulnar, femoral, popliteal, posterior tibial, and dorsalis pedis.
    2. Auscultate the heart valves using a stethoscope.
    3. Utilize the Borg RPE and MET scales for conditioning a mock patient with cardiac disease.
    4. Compare vital signs before, during, and after exercise.
  5. Demonstrate an understanding of common acute care/ICU equipment and interventions.
    1. Identify common equipment found in the ICU.
    2. Demonstrate basic patient mobility and transfer skills with a mock patient in the ICU.
    3. Perform a physical therapy treatment session on a mock patient in the ICU from a case scenario.
    4. Monitor and respond to a change in patient vital signs during simulation including:
      1. Changes in HR
      2. Changes in BP
      3. Changes in RR
      4. Changes in SpO2
      5. Cardiac Arrest
  6. Use appropriate action in emergency situations.
    1. Initiate BCLS procedures during mock emergency scenarios.
