PTA 118 - Clinical Seminar I

Studies professional and diversity issues related to clinical practice.  Introduces students to medical documentation and patient/practitioner interaction.  Prepares students to be an engaged member of the Physical Therapy profession.

Prerequisite(s): HSC 105 ; Admission to the Physical Therapist Assistant Program.
Corequisite(s): PTA 101 , PTA 101LW , PTA 103 , PTA 110 , and PTA 110L.

Outcomes and Objectives  

  1. Discuss the International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health (ICF).
            A. Describe a patient's impairments to body functions and structures using the ICF model.
            B. Describe a patient’s impairments to activity limitations according to the ICF model.
            C. Describe a patient’s impairments to participation restrictions according to the ICF model. 
 
2. Utilize appropriate medical documentation to thoroughly document all aspects of patient care.
            A. Describe the SOAP note format.
            B.Correctly identify which category medical information is placed in, within the SOAP note.
 
3. Demonstrate a commitment to professionalism, educational growth, and civic involvement.   
   A. Participate in professional growth activities related to physical therapy.
   B. Participate in civic activities.
   C. Define social determinants of health.
   D. Discuss healthcare disparities.
 
4. Explain the purpose of the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA).
   A. Define legislative/political advocacy.
   B. Discuss the value of membership.
   C. Explore the APTA website.

5. Discuss relevant legal or ethical issues as well as responses to the issues.
