Utilizes the Delta College simulation lab to provide a realistic environment in order to demonstrate the ability to follow hospital protocols, communicate effectively, maintain professionalism and provide empathy during sensitive exams.
Prerequisite(s): DMS 111 , DMS 114 , DMS 115 , DMS 116W , and DMS 117W each with a “B” (3.0) minimum grade. Corequisite(s): DMS 201 , DMS 202 , DMS 207 , LWA 206B , and LWA 206C . Lecture Hours: 7.5 Lab Hours: 0 Meets MTA Requirement: None Pass/NoCredit: No
Outcomes and Objectives
- Demonstrate, through simulation exercises, knowledge of the role of the sonographer in patient management.
- Demonstrate the ability to take a complete patient history according to the exam ordered
- Demonstrate the ability to correlate patient history with related imaging, other testing and lab procedures and outcomes.
- Demonstrate the ability to read and understand a requisition order
- Demonstrate positive patient interaction in the process of getting the patient ready for the exam, performing the exam, and dismissing the patient
- Demonstrate the ability to develop communication strategies to deal with inappropriate patient behavior
- Demonstrate the ability to show concern and empathy for the patient who is in distress and choose appropriate actions according to the particular situation
- Demonstrate the ability to educate the patient regarding the ultrasound exam to be completed and their experience in the ultrasound department
- Demonstrate the ability to handle inappropriate patient behavior towards the sonographer and seek help if needeD
- Demonstrate proper application of institution policies as they relate to sonographer/patient interaction
