DMS 114 - Advanced OB/GYN SonographyCredits: 2 Instructional Contact Hours: 2
Presents pathology and disease processes, normal and abnormal sonographic patterns, clinical correlation, and differential diagnosis of the obstetrical and gynecologic patient.

Outcomes and Objectives
- Demonstrate knowledge of anatomy and sonographic appearances for the 2nd and 3rd trimester placenta.
- Identify the chorionic plate, substance and basal layers
- Discuss transducer and equipment requirements
- Discuss normal sonographic appearance and the grading system
- Demonstrate knowledge of pathology of the 2nd and 3rd trimester placenta.
- Describe the sonographic findings and patient clinical history for:
- Placenta previa
- Placenta abruption
- Succenturiate lobe and variations
- Abnormal adherence
- Trophoblastic disease
- Demonstrate knowledge of normal and abnormal fetal growth patterns and pregnancy dating.
- Define gestational age
- Discuss measurements used to evaluate fetal growth
- Explain the difference between asymmetric and symmetric IUGR
- Discuss morbidity and mortality related to large and small for dates fetuses
- Explain the effect of IUGR on amniotic fluid volume
- Describe placental grade in relation to IUGR
- Demonstrate knowledge of the fetal biophysical profile scoring method.
- List the parameters of a BPP
- Explain the scoring method for BPP
- Correlate BPP score with clinical results
- Demonstrate knowledge of amniotic fluid volume in 2nd and 3rd trimester pregnancy.
- Describe the method for evaluating amniotic fluid
- Correlate AFI with gestational parameters and clinical outcome
- Correlate AFI with BPP score
- Demonstrate knowledge of umbilical cord Doppler.
- Describe how an umbilical cord Doppler is obtained
- List indications for doing a cord Doppler
- Correlate umbilical cord Doppler with clinical outcome

- Describe the sonographic features and clinical outcomes for the following:
- Incompetent cervix
- Fetal hydrops
- Diabetic patient
- Pregnancy induced hypertension
- Preeclampsia and eclampsia

- Maternal infections
- Pre-term labor
- Demonstrate a knowledge of 2nd and 3rd trimester multiple gestation pregnancies.
- Differentiate between monozygotic and dizygotic pregnancies
- Differentiate between monochorionic and dichorionic pregnancies
- Differentiate between monoamniotic and diamniotic pregnancies
- Discuss complication rates and implications of multigestation pregnancies
- Describe a protocol for multigestation pregnancy

- Renal agenesis / Potter's syndrome
- Fetal urinary obstruction

- Demonstrate a knowledge of 2nd and 3rd trimester abdominal wall pathology and its correlation to sonographic appearance.
- Describe the sonographic findings and patient outcomes for the following:

- Limb/body wall complex
- Amniotic band syndrome
- Pentalogy of Cantrell
- Explain fetal embryogenesis in relationship to abdominal wall abnormalities
- Demonstrate knowledge of 2nd and 3rd trimester abdominal/thorax pathology and its correlation to sonographic appearance.
- Describe the sonographic findings and patient outcomes for the following:
- CAM
- Pulmonary sequestration
- Pleural effusions
- Pulmonary hypoplasia
- Stomach / GB / adrenal glands
- Duodenal atresia
- Echogenic bowel
- Demonstrate understanding of the role of the sonographer in evaluating scanning protocol modifications based on the sonographic findings and differential diagnosis.
- Recognizes indications and contraindications for the exam and exam modification
- Demonstrate ability to correlate patient history with sonographic findings and make exam modifications as necessary
- Demonstrate ability to correlate exam findings with patient history to produce a differential list
- Demonstrates understanding of the role of the sonographer in patient management.
- Demonstrates the ability to take a complete patient history according to the exam ordered
- Demonstrates the ability to correlate patient history with related imaging, other testing and lab procedures and outcomes
