This degree program is designed to allow you to complete required general education courses and introductory history courses for your intended program of study at a college or university. The transfer program is intended for students seeking to complete a bachelor's degree or higher in history. It is important to consult with a Student Success Advisor on proper course selections to align with your ultimate transfer or career goals. Fulfilling the required thirty credit (30) core courses may meet the requirements for the MTA (Michigan Transfer Agreement) articulation agreement.

Program Requirements Meeting the Michigan Transfer Agreement

Students wishing to fulfill the Michigan Transfer Agreement (MTA) must successfully complete at least 30 credits of MTA approved courses with a minimum of a “C” (2.0) or better in each course. Students are encouraged to consult with a Student Success Advisor about course selection based on transfer destination.

English Composition

ENG - Any approved College Composition I Course
ENG - Any approved College Composition II Course

Approved College Composition I courses are ENG 111A , ENG 111B , ENG 111C , ENG 111H , or ENG 111 .

Approved College Composition II courses are ENG 112A , ENG 112H , ENG 112 , ENG 113 , ENG 211H , or ENG 211 .

Humanities

COM - Any COM course from the MTA Approved List
Additional Humanities elective from the MTA Approved List

Note: A foreign language is recommended. Humanities courses must be from two different subjects.

Social Sciences

Foundational Civics - Any History course HIS 237W or below (recommended) or any Political Science course POL 232W or below
Additional Social Sciences elective from the MTA Approved List

HIS 237W and POL 105W will satisfy both the Foundational Civics and Civic Engagement graduation requirements. Social Science courses must be from two different subjects.

Natural Sciences

Any Natural Science course with lab from the MTA Approved List
Any Natural Science course with or without lab from the MTA Approved List

Note: BIO 230W is recommended as a non-lab course. Natural Science courses must be from two different subjects.

Math

MTH - Any Mathematics course from the MTA Approved List

Additional Degree Requirements

Civic Engagement

Any Civic Engagement option from the list below

Approved options are:

HIS 237W (recommended) or POL 105W since the civic engagement project is in the outcome and objectives.

A Civic Engagement project (1 credit) - A faculty member (History faculty member recommended) must supervise this project, either as a project tied to a course, or as individualized instruction.

HIS 237W and POL 105W will satisfy both the Foundational Civics and Civic Engagement graduation requirements.

Lifelong Wellness

Complete a minimum of 2 credits in any set of Lifelong Wellness course options from approved list on Associate in Arts Degree - AA

Major Courses

A minimum of four history classes (at least one American and one non-American) is required as part of the general electives needed for an Associate in Arts degree. Choose from the following:

American (generally U.S.-focused) Courses:

HIS 215W —Recent African-American History: Since 1865
HIS 217W —Hispanics in the U.S.
HIS 221W —Early American History
HIS 222W —Recent American History
HIS 225W —History of Women and Gender in the United States
HIS 237W —History of Michigan/With Project

Non-American Courses:

HIS 111W —A Survey of Early Western Civilization
HIS 112W —A Survey of Later Western Civilization
HIS 240W — Renaissances and Reformations in Early Modern Europe
HIS 242W —Medieval History: c. 500-1500 CE

Additional Electives

Additional electives as needed to earn the 62 credit hours required for an Associate in Arts degree. Elective courses may be taken from History or other disciplines. At least one additional History course is recommended in addition to the four required. Notations

B. HIS 237W and POL 105W will satisfy both the Foundational Civics and Civic Engagement graduation requirements.

C. Students with special considerations for exercise should reach out to the course instructor, program coordinator, and/or Office of Disability Resources for exercise accommodations when appropriate. The Lifelong Wellness Activity (LWA) 1 credit class can be waived with a full season of intercollegiate athletics validated by the Athletic Director.
