OAT 260 - Medical TranscriptionCredits: 3 Introduces techniques for transcribing physicians' dictation of medical progress notes, operative reports, letters, and miscellaneous medical documents. Incorporates extensive practice and application of medical terminology, spelling, grammar, punctuation, and capitalization. Uses various medical forms and covers editing techniques.
Prerequisite(s): OAT 172 , HSC 105 , and one of the following: BIO 101W , BIO 140W , BIO 152W , BIO 153W , or BIO 240 ; all with a minimum grade of “C” (2.0). Corequisite(s): None Lecture Hours: 45 Lab Hours: 0 Meets MTA Requirement: None Pass/NoCredit: Yes
Outcomes and Objectives
- Operate transcription equipment to produce legally acceptable medical documents in final form from physicians’ dictation.
- Use and adjust transcription equipment effectively
- Transcribe dictation from both American-born and foreign-born physicians in multiple medical specialties
- Edit to correct terminology, grammar, spelling, punctuation, word division, and contextual errors in transcribed material
- Identify and use legally acceptable closures in documents
- Use multiple resources as problem solving tools when transcribing and editing medical dictation.
- Use medical and English dictionaries.
- Use software spell-checking features.
- Use the Physician’s Desk Reference.
