HSC 105 - Medical Terminology

Develops a basic understanding of the spelling and meaning of commonly used prefixes, suffixes, and word roots, and their combining forms. Comprehension of these word parts will allow proper use of words for the development of professional language use in the allied health professions.

Outcomes and Objectives
  1. Identify and define the four word parts (word root, suffix, prefix, and combining vowel).
    1. Utilize word parts to define and analyze medical terms.
    2. Utilize word parts to build medical terms for a given definition.
  2. Demonstrate appropriate utilization of terms used to describe body directions, anatomical planes, and abdominal regions.
    1. Define terms to describe the body directions, anatomical planes, and abdominal regions.
    2. Spell terms related to body planes, anatomical planes, and abdominal regions.
  3. Build medical terms related to each system utilizing word parts and complementary terms which do not use word parts for the following systems:
    1. Human body system
    2. Integumentary system
    3. Respiratory system
    4. Urinary system
    5. Reproductive system including obstetrics and neonatology
    6. Cardiopulmonary system
    7. Lymphatic system
    8. Digestive system
    9. Special senses
    10. Musculoskeletal system
    11. Nervous system
    12. Endocrine system
  4. Define, spell, and analyze medical terms related to each system utilizing word parts and complementary terms which do not use word parts for the following systems:
