Outcomes and Objectives 1. Have an understanding of similarity and differences from private practice and community health approaches to care of a population. A student will also have a basic understanding of the processes through which health policies are developed and regulated.
A. Define health, public health, dental public health and epidemiology.
B. Compare and contrast the roles and procedures of a private practitioner versus a public health practitioner.
C. Describe the history and organization of dental public health services.
D. Identify the issues of community oral health.
E. Review and define epidemic, endemic and pandemic.
2. Have an understanding of basic concepts, including technical skills of assessing a community for development of dental public health
programs.
A. Identify the items to be assessed for a complete community profile.
B. Define, differentiate and state indications for the different methods of assessment:

D. Discuss the purposes of evaluating dental literature.
E. Define the role and responsibility of the critic.

addition the student will be exposed to the skills necessary to assume the leadership role in their community.

C. Discuss the reasons for more than one proposed solution.
D. Correctly write up a proposal for a health project.
4. Have an understanding of basic concepts, including technical skills, involving implementation and operation of dental public health
programs. In addition the student will be exposed to the skills necessary to assume the leadership role in their community. The student
will understand basic technical skills in areas of advocacy building.
A. Identify and explain solutions to problems that can occur during implementation of different projects.
B. Review and discuss educational strategies involved in implementation.
5. Have an understanding of the imporatnce of evaluating dental literature. A student will also have the basic understanding of the criteria
utilized for reviewing dental literature and the terminolgy utilized.

E. Respect the goals, values, beliefs and preferences of the the patient/client while promoting optimal oral and general health.
F. Identify individual and population risk factors and develop strategies that promote health- related quality of life, for example: fluoride, PFS,
nutrition, and smokeless tobacco.
G. Evaluate factors that can be used to promot patient/client adherence to disease prevention and/or health maintenance strategies.
H. Evaluate and utilize methods to ensure the health and safety of the patient/client and the dental hygienist in the delivery of dental hygiene.

effective in assessing, planning, implementation, operation, and evaluation of dental public health programs.

B. Explain ways to reduce or totally eliminate the above barriers.
