DA 123LW - Dental Radiology LabCredits: 2 Provides laboratory practice in the application of commonly used dental radiographic procedures utilizing mannequins and clinic patients.

Outcomes and Objectives
- Recognize and operate X-ray equipment.
- Recognize and operate radiographic lab equipment.
- Explain and follow lab procedures.
- Operate the x-ray unit establishing KVP, MA and time settings for any given view and type of imaging.
- Describe the rationale for exposing images.
- Provide reasons for exposing vertical and horizontal interproximal and periapical images.
- Provide reasons for using different size film/sensors./phosphorus plates
- Provide reasons for types of images.
- Utilize film-holding devices.
- State the value and rational for the use of positioning devices in health and safety of patients and to optimum technique.
- Identify parts of the device.
- Assemble device for each view.
- Position patient, film/sensor/phosphorus plate, and device for images.
- Apply parallel technique while exposing films of DXTRR.
- Position simulated patient (DXTRR) for each projection.
- Expose FMX and interproximal images on adult DXTRR.
- Expose Pediatric , edentulous, occlusal, and third molar images
- Given DXTRR, position the film/sensor/phosphorus plate for any intraoral projection.
- Adjust horizontal and vertical tube angulation.
- Adjust machine setting for each view.
- Expose radiographic surveys on DXTRR according to criteria.
- Develop radiographic competence at stated level (according to evaluation checklists) for each radiographic projection in a full mouth series and interproximal series.
- Apply parallel technique while exposing film on patients.
- While applying aseptic, radiation health, and patient management techniques, expose, and complete evaluation form on three adult FMS at stated levels.
- Identify errors and means to correct the errors.
- Retake images.
- Evaluate films for exposure errors.
- Using radiographs produced during this course and evaluation forms, assess diagnostic quality of images according to criteria on evaluation forms.
- For each image evaluated, state corrections necessary to improve the quality of the image.
- Value importance of producing high quality diagnostic image techniques.
- Mount radiographs in film holders when applicable.
- Explain mounting procedures.
- Given mount frames and packets of radiographs, mount the series in the recommended method,
- three adult FMS
- one child FMS
- Mount all exposed films with 100% accuracy.
- Expose a PAN on a patient.
- Describe patient positioning, equipment preparation, and exposure time for exposing panoramic projections.
- Operate PAN machine.
- Practice a PAN setup.
- Produce a panoramic radiograph of diagnostic quality using a patient.
- Describe procedure using film.
- Apply radiation safety methods during exposures.
- Employ protection methods for self and patient.
- Follow lab rules during/for exposures.
- Respond to patient questions and concerns using professional, positive, and informed replies regarding the use of radiation and safety to the patient's health and welfare.
