SKMT 231 - Fundamentals of Foundry Technology

Credits: 3
Provides an overview of all the components that make up a modern foundry. Participants will become familiar with the interrelationship between the metallurgy, melting, production engineering, core, molding, finishing, and reliability and quality control departments. Special emphasis is placed on how each department is dependent upon the other and what affect each has on the production of a quality product at a competitive cost, through the use of a statistical process control.

Outcomes and Objectives
  1. To provide a basic understanding of the molding process.
    1. Be given a basic understanding of the molding process, sand testing, technology and associated equipment.
    2. Evaluate the functions and requirements of the finishing department and inspection techniques.
    3. Be exposed to how final cast iron structures are produced and how variables that affect casting properties are controlled.
    4. Be provided with basic understanding of the metallurgy principles involved in heat treatment and welding.
  2. Increase knowledge of the new processes in production technology.
    1. Study Cupola melting and iron chemistry.
    2. Study core-making processes.
    3. Study general properties of molding sand.
    4. Study beads and bead expansion in lost foam.
    5. Be exposed to tooling in lost foam.
    6. Study cluster unload, degate, and cleaning.
