SKDR 131 - Pattern Design I

Credits: 3
Course covers terms and definitions of pattern design. Students will learn how to make calculations from tables and drawing, estimate weights from pattern charts and materials codes, and sketch and detail typical pattern designs.

Outcomes and Objectives
  1. Design and dimension cope and drag pattern drawings and the appropriate mechanical components to current ANSI standards.
    1. Properly design and draw cope and drag pattern.
    2. Draw and dimenstion the various mechanical components associated with pattern tooling.
    3. Draw cope and drag pattern as an assebly ready for production.
  2. Design and dimension upper and lower corebox assemblies (isocure and hotbox).
    1. Properly design and draw upper and lower coreboxes.
    2. Design a layout for corebox vents.
    3. Design and draw proper relationship between upper and lower corebox at parting surfaces.
    4. Design and draw strip plates, ejector plates, blowplate assembly and trolley car.
  3. Design a gating and runner system properly suited to feed a casting of a given size.
    1. Design a runner and gating system using formulas for a variety of metals.
    2. Calculate cross sectional area required for gates and runners.
    3. Calculate quantity of gates and runners required.
    4. Design and draw gate and runner and gate system.
  4. Understand the placement and use of corebox pins and bushings, ejector pins, vent pins, and a variety of other foundry production aids.
    1. Draw and properly locate corebox pins and bushings.
    2. Draw and properly locate corebox ejector pins.
    3. Draw and properly locate pattern vent pins.
