SKDR 130 - Tool and Die Design

Credits: 4
Topics include: design of jigs and fixtures, design of gaging mechanisms, design of automatic tooling, machining cost calculations. The student will use this data to make class presentations with questions and answer sessions.

Outcomes and Objectives
  1. The student will be able to design tools, dies, fixtures, and jigs best suited for a particular job or task at hand.
    1. Understand a working blue print of a fixture or jig.
    2. Determine what types of location and clamping methods are best suited for building a specific fixture or jig based on efficiency and safety.
    3. Determine which types of cutting tools to use on a fixture or a jig setup.
    4. Learn how to design a gaging method to check a produced part.
    5. Understand the different types of presses used in the industry to perform the broad range of projects required (sheet metal, blanking, and piercing dies).
    6. Understand what a die set is and how each part works including punches, dies, and strippers.
    7. Understand the advantages of using “plastics” as tooling materials.
    8. Develop the knowledge to design and assemble fixtures used for numerically controlled machine tools.
    9. Develop an understanding to choose the right tool for a particular numerically controlled machine tool setup.
