PTA 101 - Applied Clinical Anatomy I

Credits: 2


Provides skeletal anatomy concepts necessary to implement procedures utilized in physical therapy practice. Provides the technical and data collection knowledge necessary to assist a physical therapist with goniometry. Prepares the student to perform physical therapy intervention as part of a physical therapist's plan of care, under the direction and supervision of the physical therapist.

Prerequisite(s): Admission to Physical Therapist Assistant program.
Corequisite(s): PTA 101LW , PTA 103  , PTA 110 , PTA 110L , PTA 118 , and PTA 121  .

    1. Define anatomical terminology.

    1. Label and define normal and abnormal curves of vertebral column.

  3. Describe the neuromusculoskeletal characteristics of the human upper extremity.
    1. Identify real or functional joints of the shoulder complex.
    2. Define scapulo-humeral rhythm and glenohumeral rhythm.
    3. Explain carrying angle of the elbow joint.
    4. Describe the bony anatomy of the upper extremity.
    5. Describe the clinical significance of upper extremity bony landmarks.
  4. Describe the neuromusculoskeletal characteristics of the human lower extremity.
    1. Identify structural and functional differences between the hip and shoulder.
    2. Describe the articular surface of the acetabulum.
    3. Explain the angle of inclination and the angle of torsion.
    4. Describe selected bursae of the body joints and locations.
    5. Describe the bony anatomy of the lower extremity.
    6. Describe the clinical significance of lower extremity bony landmarks.
  5. Discuss the human skeletal system.
    1. Communicate verbally to patients, peers, caregivers, and other health care professionals using proper anatomical terminology appropriate to the audience.
    2. Communicate proper anatomical concepts as related to patients and their treatment in writing for use by medical or non-medical personnel.
    3. Describe verbally and in writing anatomical components of the body in relationship to specific symptoms, diseases or disease processes.
    4. Read and comprehend anatomical references in patient charts, or other literature.
  6. Discuss relevant potential legal and ethical issues as well as responses to each issue.

    2. List the ypes of mobilitiy exercises that are available.
    3. Differentiate between AROM, AAROM, and PROM.
    4. Compare and contrast indications/benefits/limitation of AROM, AAROM, and PROM.
    5. Describe the effect of gravity in respect to joint active mobility.
    6. Differentiate between gravity resisted, gravity, eliminated, and gravity assisted.
    7. Determine positions of the body, in respect to GR, GE, and GA, for mobility exercises.
    8. Define the concepts of muscles insufficiencies.
    9. Describe ROM end feels.
