Provides a comprehensive exploration of the physical, cognitive, and social/emotional development of children from conception to the onset of adolescence. Explores the significance of childhood in the total life span. Analyzes the impact of heredity, environment, and culture on children¹s development, as well as the impact children have on others.

  2. Apply the main theories of child development to child care practices.
    1. Examine and evaluate psychoanalytic theory (e.g. Freud, Erikson).
    2. Examine and evaluate cognitive theories (e.g. Piaget, Vygotsky, Information Processing).
    3. Examine and evaluate ecological/contextual theory (e.g. Bronfenbrenner).
    4. Examine and evaluate learning theory (e.g. Watson, Skinner, Bandura).
  3. Describe the cognitive, social-emotional, and physical characteristics and principles of development from conception to adolescence.
    1. Examine the interaction of biological and environmental influences on child development.
    2. Examine significant issues and topics relating to the process of child development.
