WELD 123 - Introduction to Print Reading for Welders

This course equips students with essential skills for reading and interpreting blueprints used in welding and fabrication, following standards set by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), which are recognized and approved by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI). Students will focus on key concepts such as orthographic projection, sectional views, detail/ assembly drawings, and critical elements like title blocks, dimensioning methods, scale, tolerances, notations, and material lists. Additionally, the course will cover the application of the American Welding Society's A2.4:2020 Standard Symbols for Welding, Brazing, and Nondestructive Examination, ensuring students can accurately interpret welding symbols in accordance with industry requirements.

Outcomes and Objectives
  1. Describe detail and assembly drawings and explain their organization.
  1. Explain the structure and role of detail and assembly drawings in the fabrication process, highlighting their significance in guiding production.
  2. Define and describe key elements of these drawings, including dimensions, tolerances, title blocks, revision blocks, general and specific notes, and material lists.
  1. Utilize and interpret written standard multiview, sectional view, and auxiliary view prints.
  1. Explain the principles of orthographic projection, including the criteria for selecting, organizing, and positioning views on technical drawings.
  2. Describe the purpose and function of sectional views in conveying internal features of parts on industrial blueprints.
  3. Identify and interpret the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) sectional view practices, including full, half, offset, aligned, broken-out, auxiliary, revolved, and removed sections.

    3. Interpret written industrial prints to determine size, location, and tolerance dimensions.

  1. Locate accurately, troubleshoot, and interpret specified dimensions on technical drawings.
  2. Calculate and interpret dimensional tolerances as specified in industrial prints.
  3. Analyze and apply the correct scale to interpret dimensions in proportion to the actual part size.
  4. Identify and interpret different dimensioning methods (e.g., chain, baseline, coordinate) used on industrial blueprints.
  5. Understand and use datum points for accurate referencing and alignment of dimensions and tolerances.

    4. Demonstrate understanding of welding processes and welding symbols.

  1. Identify and explain the major parts of AWS welding symbols.
  2. Identify the major weld joints and accompanying weld types applicable to each.
  3. Interpret specified destructive and nondestructive weld testing methods as indicated on blueprint.
  4. Identify the anatomy of fillet and groove welds, and define the terms used to describe their measurable features relevant to visual inspection (e.g., throat, leg, root, reinforcement, etc.).
  5. Understand and explain the relationship between the Welding Procedure Specification (WPS), Procedure Qualification Record (PQR), and how these documents relate to the welding symbols found on blueprints.
