Outcomes and Objectives
- Assess abnormal psychology as a field of psychology, including its historical and present context.
- Discuss the standards used to identify abnormal behavior.
- Discuss the historical views and treatments of abnormal behavior.
- Compare and contrast models of psychological abnormality, and associated treatments.
- Define the major models of abnormal psychology: psychodynamic, cognitive, humanistic, behavioral, and biological.
- Describe the major models of psychological treatments: psychodynamic, cognitive, humanistic, behavioral, and biological.
- Examine the anxiety disorders, including symptoms and treatments.
- Describe the symptoms of generalized anxiety disorder, phobic disorder, panic disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder in accordance with DSM-IV (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition).
- Identify effective treatments for each of the anxiety disorders.
- Examine the mood disorders, including symptoms and treatments.
- Describe the symptoms of dysthymic disorder, major depressive disorder, and bipolar disorder.
- Identify effective treatments for each of the mood disorders.
- Examine problems of the mind-body connection.
- Identify the somatoform disorders, including the symptoms and treatments associated with these disorders.
- Identify the eating disorders, including the symptoms and treatments associated with these disorders.
