Studies the scientific principles underlying behavior and mental processes by applying the major theoretical perspectives in psychology. Explores basic research methods, biopsychology, personality, learning, cognition, human development, social/cultural influences, stress and coping, perception, motivation, sexuality and gender, states of consciousness, psychological disorders and treatment. Examines the commonality of the human experience as well as the differences that make each individual unique. Credit may be earned in only one of the following: PSY 211W, PSY 211HW , or PSY 211CW .
Prerequisite(s): High school GPA of 2.5 or higher or completion of ENG 111 ENG 111A ,or ENG 111C with a grade of “C” or higher Corequisite(s): None Lecture Hours: 60 Lab Hours: 0 Meets MTA Requirement: Social Science Pass/NoCredit: Yes

1. Describe key concepts, principles, or overarching themes in psychology.
- Use psychological terminology and concepts accurately to explain behavior and mental processes.
- Describe how psychological, biological, social, and cultural factors influence behavior and mental processes.
- Identify key concepts and principles of major content domains (neuroscience, learning, memory, etc.) in psychology.
2. Demonstrate an understanding of scientific inquiry.
- Interpret research findings related to psychological concepts.
- Critically evaluate the quality of research including asking relevant questions to gather information about scientific claims.
- Explain the scientific foundations in psychology, including the advantages and disadvantages of the various experimental and non-experimental research methodologies.
- Apply ethical standards to evaluate psychological science and practice.
3. Explain how psychological principles are used to promote the health of individuals or social groups.
- Identify factors that influence psychological and physical health.
- Apply psychological principles to personal growth and other aspects of everyday life.
- Explain how psychology values diversity and promotes equity in pursuit of a more just society.
- Explain how individual and sociocultural differences (race, gender, socioeconomic status, etc.) influence development and health.
4. Utilize effective writing to show an understanding of basic psychological concepts.
