Outcomes and Objectives
- Understand the history of the diagnosis/treatment of children with exceptional needs.
- Examine the progression of laws which address the education of exceptional children
- Analyze the diagnostic terminology previously used in describing exceptional children.
- Identify interventions used in the past with exceptional children.
- Understand the current definitions and characteristics of children with exceptional needs.
- Examine and evaluate the diagnostic classifications of exceptional children, e.g., mental retardation, learning disabilities, emotional/behavioral disabilities, communication disorders, deafness, blindness, physical/health impairments, multiple disabilities, and gifted and talented.
- Understand the current intervention approaches used with exceptional children.
- Evaluate the advantages/disadvantages of segregated and inclusive models of intervention.
- Examine the effectiveness of prevention/early intervention.
- Examine special education in a culturally and linguistically diverse society.
- Examine the family's role in special education services.
- Examine the importance of planning for the transition from childhood to adulthood.
- Participate in “writing to learn” activities.
- Perform writing tasks to promote learning.
- Write effectively for a specific audience and purpose.
- Demonstrate the learning of concepts through writing.
