DH 228 - Dental Hygiene Seminar III

Provides theory and techniques of treating patients with chemical dependencies and special needs. Includes the coordination of treatment phases of the AIDS patient.

Prerequisite(s): DH 210W , DH 213 , DH 214W , DH 215 , DH 216W  and DH 219W   each with a “C” (2.0) minimum grade.
Corequisite(s): DH 222W , DH 225 , DH 227W , DH 229 , LWA 206C .

Outcomes and Objectives
  1. Identify the signs and symptoms related to hormonal changes. 
    1. Consider treatment modifications, treatment outcomes and appropriate and effective patient education when treating patients with the specified hormonal changes.
    2. Describe the clinical symptoms of the gingiva which may occur during the various hormonal changes.
    3. Pregnancy: Describe the effects of various infectious diseases and of drug, alcohol, and tobacco use on the fetus.
    4. Pregnancy: Explain how prenatal fluoride affects the caries rate in the newborn child.
  2. Demonstrate dental hygiene care of a homebound, bedridden, wheelchair bound or unconscious patient.
    1. Demonstrate treatment methods and modifications for homebound, bedridden, wheelchair bound or unconscious patients.
    2. Provide instruction to caregivers for providing effective oral hygiene care to patients under their care.
    3. Explain the process of preparation for a home visit and describe equipment necessary for a home visit.
  3. Recognize the signs and symptoms of patients that abuse alcohol.
    1. Recognize signs of alcohol intoxication, abuse, dependence and withdrawal.
    2. Identify long-term effects of heavy alcohol consumption on the gastrointestinal system, the liver, nutritional status, nervous system, endocrine system, mental functions, cardiovascular system, skeletal muscles and the development of certain cancers and specific infectious diseases.
  4. Identify alcohol treatment and intervention strategies.
    1. Identify and define the stages of alcoholism intervention, treatment and rehabilitation.
    2. Explain treatment protocol to effectively treat patients  experiencing alcohol abuse, identifying the contraindications of providing care.
  5. Recognize the signs and symptoms of the patient that abuses drugs.
    1. Recognize signs of drug use, dependence and withdrawal.
    2. Identify long-term effects of drug abuse on the gastrointestinal system, the liver, nutritional status, nervous system, endocrine system, mental functions, cardiovascular system, skeletal muscles and the development of certain cancers and specific infectious diseases.
    3. Discuss protocol for reporting drug use, laws regarding the prescribing of controlled substances and exceptions to confidentiality laws when drug abuse is involved.
  6. Identify drug treatment and intervention strategies.
    1. Explain treatment protocol to effectively treat patients that are experiencing drug abuse, including the contraindications of providing care.
    2. Name and describe the stages of drug abuse intervention, treatment and rehabilitation.
    3. Discuss protocol for reporting drug use, laws regarding the prescribing of controlled substances and exceptions to confidentiality laws when drug abuse is involved
  7. Identify the effects on patients that use tobacco.​
    1. Identify patterns and trends in the use of tobacco products.
    2. Describe the components of tobacco products and the metabolism of nicotine.
    3. Compare and contrast the health hazards associated with smoking with those related to forms of smokeless tobacco.
    4. Discuss the effects of environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) on adults, children and the fetus.
    5. Recognize the effect of tobacco use on periodontal conditions and treatment outcomes.
    6. Explain nicotine addiction and the stages of tobacco habit formation, including physical and psychological aspects.
  8. Demonstrate the ability to perform tobacco cessation counseling.
    1. ​Describe pharmacotherapies utilized for tobacco cessation.
    2. Assess the patient to identify the stage of addiction and willingness to quit.
    3. Educate the patient on the oral and systemic effects of tobacco use and nicotine addiction.
    4. Create and implement a customized tobacco cessation plan for the patient including management of withdrawal, strategies for handling cravings/urges and goal setting.
  9. Identify the signs and symptoms, of a patient with HIV/AIDS.
    1. Identify the stages of HIV Infection, systemic and oral conditions, transmission of the virus, statistics, clinical categories, psycho-social aspects.
    2. Discuss the importance of confidentiality related to HIV/AIDS.
  10. Explain HIV/AIDS treatment and protocol.
