Provides an opportunity to identify the steps and begin using the process of case documentation for dental patients' conditions and treatment.

Outcomes and Objectives
  1. Examine how case development and documentation may be used by a hygienist.
    1. Define case study.
    2. Analyze the purpose, the intended audience, and the expected outcomes or goals on a given case.
    3. Identify the components that can be developed and documented on a given case.
    4. Critique former case study research reports.
  2. Demonstrate the ability to develop a case presentation for oral presentation or written reports.
    1. Obtain, review and update medical and dental histories.
    2. Recognize health conditions and medications that impact overall patient care.
    3. Select, obtain, and interpret diagnostic information recognizing it advantages and limitations.
    4. Recognize predisposing and etiologic risk facts that require intervention to treat and prevent disease.
    5. Use assessment finding, etiologic factors and clinical data to determine a hygiene diagnosis.
    6. Establish a collaborative relationship with the patient in the planned care.
    7. Identify patient needs and significant findings that impact the delivery of hygiene services.
    8. Establish a planned sequence of care.
    9. Implement dental hygiene interventions.
    10. Analyze the outcomes of hygiene interventions using indices, instruments, examination techniques and patient self-report.
    11. Evaluate the patient’s satisfaction with the oral healthcare received and the oral healthcare status achieved.
    12. Plan and provide subsequent treatment or referrals based on evaluation findings.
    13. Develop and maintain a health maintenance program.
