WHY WE VALUE LIFELONG WELLNESS AT DELTA

Why do Delta students need lifelong wellness?

  • Wellness plays a crucial role in students' overall academic success, personal development, and lifelong well-being.

Why does Delta College have a responsibility to ensure students meet this requirement?

  • Community college students often experience disparities in access to healthcare, regular exercise, proper nutrition, and mental health support. These disparities often result in higher rates of chronic diseases, lower life expectancy, higher healthcare costs, and reduced overall wellness. By empowering these students to improve their personal wellness, the college helps to decrease these health disparities, reduce healthcare costs, and improve overall quality of life that result from a combination of socioeconomic, cultural, environmental, and systemic factors.
  • Students who are physically active tend to have better grades, school attendance, cognitive performance, and classroom behavior. Higher physical activity levels are associated with improved ability to manage stress, decrease illness and healthcare costs, and cope with change and barriers that are seen in the community college student population.
  • Delta College works to address barriers outside of the classroom that students face, such as mental health, housing, financial instability, and food insecurity. The wellness courses help to address student needs in mental health, financial wellness, and food insecurity.
  • Delta College’s mission is to deliver and sustain an enriching education that empowers our diverse and inclusive community to achieve their personal, professional, and academic goals. Lifelong wellness helps achieve this mission by helping our students to establish healthy self-care habits, study skills, and stress management techniques so that they are better equipped to cope with stress, adapt to change, be productive in the workforce, and persist in the face of obstacles.
  • Ultimately, promoting wellness is about enhancing the overall quality of life for community college students. When students feel good physically, mentally, and emotionally, they are better positioned to make the most of their educational experience, persist in their education, and carry that forward beyond the academic setting into their personal lives and career.
