Clinical Medical Assistant - Advanced Certificate

Program Code: CBA.35288 Medical assistants perform routine administrative and clinical tasks to keep the offices of physicians and other health practitioners running smoothly. Medical office staff members must have strong communication skills, organizational ability, computer knowledge, and excellent human relations skills. Medical assistants also work alongside physicians, mainly in outpatient or ambulatory care facilities, such as medical offices and clinics. Medical Assistants are responsible for taking medical histories and recording vital signs, explaining treatment procedures to patients, preparing patients for examination, and assisting the physician during the examination. This certificate has a common core of classes that is also required for the Medical Administrative Assistant Associate in Business Studies Degree. Those core classes include HSC 105 , HSC 205W , OAT 116 , and OAT 151 .

Notations
- A grade of “C” (2.0) or higher is required in the following courses: BIO 140W , CMA 209 ,CMA 210 , CMA 245 , CST 134 , HSC 105 , HSC 205W , OAT 116 , OAT 151 , OAT 159 , OAT 170 , and OAT 254.
- BIO 140W , CMA 245 , CST 134 , HSC 105 , HSC 205W , OAT 159 , and OAT 254 are key courses and must be completed within 5 years of starting certificate. Failure to complete within the stated time frame will require you to repeat this course.
- Keyboarded assignments are required for OAT 151 .
- OAT 210 has a 160-hour unpaid externship requirement built into last 7 ½ weeks of course.
- All students are required to complete a Criminal Background Check through iChat no later than 2 weeks prior to the beginning of classes. Results will be secured and kept confidential but may be shared with clinical agencies when requested or as otherwise required by law. It is recommended students meet with the program coordinator prior to taking or disclosing the results of the background check to discuss previous convictions, felony or misdemeanor, and/or traffic violations involving controlled substances. If results indicate a felony/misdemeanor the CMA Program Coordinator will discuss the findings and the process with the student. Clinical sites may restrict students with a criminal record from being placed at the facility which could prohibit course completion and progression in the program. Graduates may be ineligible to sit for the CMA examination.
- Following entry into the program the Student will be required to present proof of up-to-date immunizations, which may include the COVID Vaccination, depending on the site assignment. Proof of Hepatitis B series and a recent TB test (within the past year) is required. Proof of a current physical examination may also be required.
- Students are responsible for providing their own transportation to and from clinical sites and possible parking fees. You must have transportation available, as sites may not be in your community.
- The CMA Student Handbook contains specific program policies, requirements, and information that you are required to comply with while enrolled in the program. All policies must be adhered to for progression in the program.
