SKET 139 - Motors

The principles of electromagnetism are discussed and applied to the theory and the operation of DC motors, AC motors, permanent magnet, and brushless DC motors. Motor components, starting requirements, characteristics, maintenance, and troubleshooting techniques are discussed in lecture and applied in laboratory exercises. Credit may be earned in SKEL 131  or SKET 139 but not both.

Prerequisite(s): SKET 134  with a minimum grade of “C”.

  1. Explain the theory of operation for various motors and identify primary components.
    1. Explain the principle of magnetism and how it applies to attracting and repelling forces.
    2. Explain the concept of electromagnetism and how it is used to cause the rotation of a motor.
    3. Identify the primary components of DC and AC motors.
    4. Describe the basic operation of DC and AC motors.
    5. Explain the operation of a permanent magnet motor.
    6. Explain the operation of a brushless DC motor.
    7. Explain the relationship between resistance, inductance, and capacitance and relate these principles to the starting and operation of single phase AC motors.
  2. Explain how to select and run a motor for a given application.
    1. Differentiate between the starting requirements for different motors.
    2. Differentiate between the operating characteristics of different motors.
    3. Describe how to select a motor for a given application.
    4. Develop circuit diagrams for the basic operation of various motors.
  3. Explain how to determine if a motor is functioning properly.
    1. Interpret motor nameplate data to determine expected values for a properly functioning motor.
    2. Describe preventative maintenance procedures for motors.
    3. Describe common failures that may be experienced with different types of motors.
  4. Conduct laboratory experiments to reinforce lecture material.
    1. State, comprehend, and comply with safety precautions when working on electrical equipment.
