RAD 212 - Advanced Imaging Equipment

Presents the basic principles of operation of CT, MRI, PET, Ultrasound, Nuclear Medicine, Fluoroscopy, Mammography, Tomography, Radiation Therapy, Bone Densitometry, Angiography and Subtraction/Duplication equipment.

Prerequisite(s): RAD 135 , RAD 140W RAD 210W , RAD 230 , RAD 235 , RAD 235L , RAD 264  each with a “C” (2.0) minimum grade
Corequisite(s): RAD 160 , RAD 165W

Outcomes and Objectives
  1. Demonstrate an understanding of specialized imaging modalities.
    1. Discuss the purpose, principles, equipment and applications of Computed Tomography.  Compare the advantages of CT imaging to general diagnostic imaging. 
    2. Explain the difference between reconstructing and reformatting an image. 
    3. Explain the CT acquisition protocol for commonly performed head/neck, thorax and abdomen procedures.
    4. Explain the patient preparation necessary for commonly performed CT contrast studies. 
    5. Name the type, dosage purpose, and route of contrast administration for common CT procedures.
    6. Discuss the scientific discipline of Forensic Radiography. 
      1. Identify common areas of forensic study enhanced with radiologic imaging.
      2.  Identify common procedures performed by forensic radiographers.
      3.  Discuss the importance of producing pre- and postmortem images of comparable quality.
    7.  Discuss the importance of radiographic images as forms of evidence in a court of law.
    8. Discuss the purpose, principles, equipment and applications of PET.
    9. Discuss the purpose, principles, equipment and applications of Ultrasound.
    10. Discuss the purpose, principles, equipment and applications of Nuclear Medicine.
    11. Discuss the purpose, principles, equipment and applications of Radiation Therapy.
    12. Discuss the purpose, principles, equipment and applications of Bone Densitometry.
    13. Discuss the purpose, principles, equipment and applications of Magnetic Resonance Imaging. 
      1. Compare the advantages of MR imaging to general diagnostic imaging.
      2. Describe the basic safety considerations necessary for MRI.
    14. Discuss the purpose, principles, equipment and applications of Cardiovascular Imaging.
