SKMT 112 - Ferrous Heat TreatmentCredits: 2 Designed to acquaint students with various forms of heat treatment applied to plain carbon steels, cast iron, alloy tool steel, and stainless steel. Course will also include steel classification and machinability.

Outcomes and Objectives
- The student will identify surface hardening techniques.
- The student will explain the differences among cyaniding, nitriding, and carburizing.
- The student will name three types of carburizing.
- The student will recognize different types of stainless steels.
- The student will list the properties of ferritic, austentitic, mortensitic, and precipitation hardening stainless steel.
- The student will recognize different types of cast iron.
- The student will list the properties of gray, white, ductile, and malleable cast iron.
- The student will be able to heat treat a given alloy tool steel.
- The student will understand terminology unique to heat treating.
- The student will explain the differences among water, oil, and air hardening alloys.
- The student will explain the effects of atmospheres and furnace design.
