PHM 285 - Pharmacology for Health Care ProfessionalsCredits: 3 Presents the basic foundation of pharmacology. Offers drug information in group classification format and includes drug indications, action, contraindications, side effects, implications for administration, and related client/family teaching, integrates anatomy and pathophysiology, microbiology and drug administration concepts. Credit may be earned in NUR 285 or PHM 285, but not both.

- Demonstrate application of pharmacologic principles and related concepts in the context for clinical case studies.
- Principles of pharmacology, history, sources, drug names, classification.
- Regulation, control, and legal aspects of drug administration, dosage forms.
- Pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of drugs, drug monitoring.
- Drug reactions and interactions.
- Drug administration, types of drug orders.
- Integration of anatomy and physiology, microbiology, laboratory monitoring into each drug classification category.
- Basic pathophysiology of diseases discussed and purpose of drug therapy.
- Nursing process and ability to work up a medication sheet and care related drug education.
- Identification of drug effectiveness.
- Common drug names (generic and brand name) for each classification.
- Each drug classification:
- indication of use
- specific site of action/mode of action
- precautions/contraindications
- side effects
- Implications: client assessment and teaching, lab monitoring, and evaluation
- Utilize appropriate drug related information sources.
- Research drugs I pharmacological texts.
- Use laboratory and diagnostic testing references necessary for specific drug therapies.
- Address patient/family concerns related to drug therapy.
- Discuss special consideration related to gerontology, over-the-counter drugs, culture and psychological aspects of therapy.
- Identify patient/family teaching needed for each drug classification.
