SKEL 131 - AC/DC Machinery

This course is one in a series of courses on conventional industrial controls. Topics include physics of electromotive forces, armature reaction, induction, DC generator types, AC generators, DC motors, DC motor starters, transformers, AC motors and variable speed drive systems.

Outcomes and Objectives
  1. Identify and apply different types of electric motors and gain a thorough understanding of how each type of motor operates.
    1. Gain an understanding of electro-magnetism and inductance. Apply this understanding to the operation of AC induction motors.
    2. Apply electro-magetic theory to understand the operation of DC motors, DC generators, and AC generators.
    3. Build a sample DC motor to demonstrate the principle of armature reaction.
    4. Understand the basics of servo motor operation.
  2. Gain basic knowledge of troubleshooting and maintenance tools utilized to repair and maintain electric motors.
    1. Understand basic electrical and mechanical maintenance tools.
    2. Gain a general understanding of the processes utilized to troubleshoot and repair electro-mechanical equipment.
  3. Gain basic knowledge of the operation and application of AC and DC adjustable speed drives and soft starts.
    1. Understand basic drive operation and block diagrams.
    2. Understand volts/hertz control and how to control speed.
    3. Apply knowledge to understand basic vector closed loop control and servo systems.
