DRF 133 - Fundamentals of Tooling Design

Identifies terms and definitions of tooling design. Designs tooling used in the pattern and tool and die industries using C.A.D. Calculates and designs gigs, fixtures, stampings, patterns, or coreboxes and the appropriate systems essential to their production. Completes C.A.D. design and C.N.C. machining of assigned projects. Credit may be earned in either DRF 133 or SKDR 133  but not both.

Prerequisite(s): DRF 125  or SKDR 111  or DRF 128  or SKDR 128  and CAD 120  or SKCA 120

Outcomes and Objectives  

  1. Use C.A.D. to design production tooling and the appropriate mechanical components.
    1. Design and produce tooling using computer aided design.
    2. Design and produce the proper components related to tooling production.
    3. Understand the use of proper cutting tool selection.
    4. Understand proper setup of C.N.C. machinery.
  2. Complete several of the following projects.
    1. Design and produce cope and drag patterns.
    2. Design and produce required coreboxes.
    3. Design and produce gate and runner systems.
    4. Design and produce fixtures required for production.
    5. Design and produce gigs required for production.
    6. Design and produce stamping dies.
    7. Determine proper types and location of clamping system based on efficiency and safety.
