Develops students' reading and writing skills in an interactive and collaborative setting as a co-requisite with ENG 111C , College Composition I. Practices writing skills including organization, sentence structure and variety, and correct usage. Practices active reading strategies including how to understand, interpret, and apply information from texts. Develops awareness of college success strategies. This class does not earn credit towards graduation. Paired with ENG 111C , College Composition I Co-Requisite, (each ENG 096 section is linked to a specific ENG 111C  section; students must be enrolled in both linked classes concurrently).

1. Practice college-level writing skills

  1. Practice appropriate writing conventions such as grammar, punctuation, sentence structure, paragraph structure
  2. Develop vocabulary to improve writing precision
  3. Practice writing processes to generate and organize ideas effectively
  4. Practice using the components of the rhetorical situation as they relate to the writing process
  5. Practice using source material
  6. Practice peer review techniques
  7. Examine feedback from the instructor to improve writing as part of the writing process

2. Practice college-level reading skills

  1. Practice analyzing the components of the rhetorical situation as they relate to the reading process 
  2. Practice reading strategies to improve comprehension
  3. Practice critical reading to support the writing process
  4. Develop vocabulary to improve reading comprehension

3. Develop college success strategies

  1. Practice specific strategies linked to student success such as time management, class engagement, and consistent completion of coursework
  2. Reflect critically on progress as writer, reader, and learner
  3. Use academic computing tools such as word processing software, the learning management system, and email
