Applies knowledge of anatomy and physiology as it relates to surgical specialties, focusing on the role of the surgical assistant during procedures.

Outcomes and Objectives
1. Correlate the relevant advanced surgical anatomy to the surgical procedure.
2. Correlate the relevant pathophysiology to the surgical procedure.
3. Analyze the specific patient care factors the surgical assistant should coordinate with the surgical team.
4. Discuss the intraoperative role and duties of the surgical assistant according to the procedure being performed.
5. Discuss newly implemented surgical procedures.
6. Discuss modifications of surgical procedures as related to approach including Open, MIS, Robotic and any other technological advancements currently in use.
7. Discuss the postoperative care of the surgical wound.
8. Describe specific diseases and disorders (comorbidities) that can affect patient outcomes, lead to surgical emergencies or add increased risk.
9. Analyze the specific patient care factors the surgical assistant should coordinate with the surgical team.
Objectives:
I. Appendectomy
A. Explain the purpose of an appendectomy, the pathology leading to an appendectomy and the approach, anatomical considerations, surgical techniques, role of the SA, and potential intra-operative and post-operative complications.
II. Breast procedures
A. Discuss the pathophysiology of breast cancer, including its progression, relevant anatomic relationships, and common sites of metastasis.
B. List diagnostic methods that may be used for breast masses.
C. Define the various types of mastectomy and possible complications.
D. Discuss comparative results of various treatment options for breast cancer.
E. Discuss other types of breast surgery that include:
i. Breast biopsy with needle localization and/or radioactive seeds
ii. Lumpectomy
iii. Sentinel lymph node localization
iv. Simple mastectomy
v. Modified radical mastectomy
vi. Axillary node dissection
III. Esophageal procedures
A. Explain the goal of Esophageal procedures, anatomical considerations, surgical techniques, role of the SA, and potential intra-operative and post-operative complications that include:
i. Nissen Fundoplication
ii. Transoral incisionless fundoplication (TIF)
iii. Esophageal gastrectomy
iv. Esophagectomy
IV. Cholecystectomy with cholangiogram
A. Discuss the etiology, diagnosis, and possible complications of gallbladder disease.
B. Define terminology related to gallbladder surgery.
C. Compare non-surgical and both open and laparoscopic surgical treatment of gallbladder disease, including possible complications, role of the SA, and different surgical approaches for gallbladder surgery.
V. Gastric and bowel resection procedures
A. Explain the goal of Gastric and bowel resection procedures, surgical approach, anatomical considerations, role of the SA, and potential intra-operative and post-operative
complications that include:
i. Gastrostomy
ii. Gastrectomy
iii. Bariatric Surgery
a. Sleeve Gastrectomy
b. Roux n Y Gastric bypass
iv. Colon Resection
a. With colostomy
b. Without colostomy
v. Abdominoperineal resection
VI. Herniorrhaphy
A. Define terminology related to hernias.
B. Differentiate direct vs. indirect inguinal hernias.
C. Describe open and laparoscopic approaches to hernia repair.
D. Discuss femoral, incisional, umbilical, and ventral hernias, and their surgical treatments and post-operative complications.
VII. Liver procedures
A. Describe the goal of Liver resection and Liver transplant procedures, and pathology, anatomical considerations, surgical approach, role of the SA, and potential intra-operative and
post-operative complications.
VIII. Splenectomy
A. Describe the goal of Splenectomy procedures, pathology, anatomical considerations, surgical approach, role of the SA, and potential intra-operative and post-operative complications.
IX. Pancreaticoduodenectomy (Whipple Procedure)
A. Review the goal of a pancreaticoduodenectomy, the pathology leading to a Whipple procedure, anatomical considerations, surgical approach, role of the SA, and potential intra-
operative and post-operative complications.
X. Anal
A. Review the pathology leading to a Hemorrhoidectomy or anal fissure, anatomical considerations, surgical approaches, role of the SA, and potential intra-operative and post-operative
considerations.
