Targets functional language ability in French at the Novice-Mid level as defined by the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) Proficiency Guidelines across all modes of communication (presentational, interpretive, interpersonal).Introduces basic grammatical structures and vocabulary of modern spoken and written French and to correct pronunciation patterns by means of oral-aural practice, small group interaction, reading of simple texts, and written exercises. Introduces certain aspects of francophone culture and to the differences between the French and the English languages. Requires supplemental (outside of class) listening, reading, speaking, and writing using ancillary materials and the textbook's Internet site.

Outcomes and Objectives Outcome 1: Communicate in French on familiar topics.

Outcome 2: Present information in French on familiar topics.

A. Present information about oneself and others using words and phrases with the help of a visual aid.

D. Present information about familiar items within one’s immediate environment
E. Talk about one’s daily activities using words, phrases, and memorized expressions

Outcome 3: Write lists or memorized phrases in French on familiar topics.

A. Write learned words and phrases
B. Label familiar people, places, and objects in pictures
C. Fill out a simple form with some basic personal information
D. Write about oneself and others using learned phrases and memorized expressions

Outcome 4: Recognize familiar spoken words or phrases in French.

A. Identify the sound of French characters or words

A. Demonstrate recognition of letters, diacritical marks, words and phrases

Outcome 6: Apply key elements of the French culture.

A. Use the appropriate level of formality required by each situation
B. Demonstrate the ability to communicate with natives avoiding socially unacceptable behaviors
C. Identify several French-speaking countries and regions
